I am going to be given a housing allowance of about 3000 Riyadh a month.
I wanted to know how I would go about finding suitable housing. Is there a comparable Craigslist where you can search for housing?

Also. is it important to try to live on a compound or not or is it cost prohibitive?

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Housing where? Which city?
The rent and quality of housing depend on the city, area, and other factors.

3000 Riyadhs a month is equivalent to perhaps a couple of trillion US dollars! That's a lot of money!

If you are being offered 3000 Riyals a month, then I can tell you that with that you can get a large 4-5 room apartment in a very good part of the city, or a studio or 1-bedroom apartment in a compound.

How do you find places to rent. Do you know of any services that help you find housing or websites like craigslist where postings are listed?

You basically have to come here and look. Try these sites, they might help, I am not sure:

www.expatriates.com
www.eharaj.com

It has to be face-to-face. You have to be actually here to do this sort of thing.

If the employer offers furnished housing, is it prohibited to strike out and find housing on your own? Especially if you can afford it?

So... you are independently wealthy? Cool Some employers allow their teachers to take a housing allowance in lieu of their provided housing. Of course, if money is no object, I don't believe that they force you to live in their provided housing if you want to pay for your own somewhere. That said, if you are a woman on her own, they may require you to stay in their housing. You would really need to check with your employer on this one.

No, not wealthy Smile. Just good at saving. Plus, the real motivation is this: I have kids who I suspect may not like to live in the provided accomodations. (I'm divorced, but my son is old enough to be a mahram, I think.)

The sponsor is usually the employer.

As VS said, you'll have to ask your employer about this. Some employers will not allow their staff (certainly not a single woman) to live off their provided housing, while others are actually eager for them to do so, especially if they do not have enough of their own accommodation for teachers. The only way to know is to ask your employers.

Most questions like this are employer-specific.
