Hey,

I am trying to find out some information about the whole move to AD. At the moment I have been given an unofficial offer which is pretty decent for a family of 1. The official offer is contingent on a "security check" which I assume is part of the process for acquiring a work/residency visa. The security check has been in progress for 10 days now. I was wondering does this process usually take a long time. As you can imagine I am trying to provide enough notice for my current employer and meet my start date deadline (if this pans out). Is it common for this to take a while?

I have been checking dubizzle, chesteronuae and abudhabiclassifieds for housing options and the office will be in Al Nahyan area. Ideally I would like a place around there on Muroor street or Khalidya but I realize these are more expensive places with potential parking nightmare. I don't mind a bit of a drive for a good place and I am getting a lot of hits for KC A on all three of these sites. I just wanted to get a feel for the distance in KM/or time of travel between these Nahyan and KC A. Are there any other places you guys recommend from your knowledge and experience. I am not looking for fancy place but somewhere that has a lot of services around it like a gym laundry services supermarket/restaurant and your other day to day needs.

I am also thinking about the possibility of living out in Dubai and commuting to work, does anyone have an actual time or distance between both cities. Options include hiring a driver, driving myself or toughing out with public transportation (buses) I have read the drive takes about 2 hours and buses around 3 anyone able to confirm?

Thanks for all your help in advance, I am lots of other questions but lets start out with the basics haha...

If your offer is with a decent employer, they are supposed to help you find housing and often even choosing the housing for you.

The Dubai-Abu Dhabi drive is 2.5 to 3 hours.

It depends on which part of each city you're talking about. It could be as little as 1 hr 25 mins, or as long as 2 hrs 30

I should clarify this position is not within the education sector, (assuming all goes well) I will be working in the entertainment sector for a joint venture between Gazillion and ADMC. The position does provide me with housing allowance but its up to me to find a suitable place to live. It seems like the commute between Dubai and Abu Dhabi is a bit of a time sink and I would prefer to avoid that.

With respect to which part of the city I don't know exactly where in Al Nahyan the Abu Dhabi Media Center Office is but I know its in that neighborhood.

What are some of the more accessible community areas in Abu Dhabi that have lots of services and stores within walking distance. It's been 17 years since I was last in Abu Dhabi so imagine a lot as changed.

Thanks for your help guys.

Personally I would just wait until you get there. Then you know where you will be working and can search on the ground. Hopefully the real estate market has improved from the nightmare of a couple years ago when some people were taking months to find something that they could afford.
