Hi --

I was offered a job by this school, after a bit of e-mail correspondence and sending out a resume. Is anyone familiar with it? How are students, other teachers, the location. Are people happy there?

Thanks Shocked

Well...rest assured that I won't subject your students to that!

Could you ask some of your students what they know about the school?

I can't tell you anything about the school itself but it is in a great part of town, right beside a beautiful park (which has an aquarium) and lots of western-style restaurants etc if that is your thing. In my experience, the universities here in Shanghai pay a pittance compared to other schools. I hope you negotiated a salary of at least 6000rmb/month. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

The campus is attractive, and several students in the private ESL school where I work study there - they strike me as bright and well-adjusted. I went to visit a friend who studies there, and it seemed nice enough. Certainly not a place I would shy away from due to it's aesthetics.

It is big too, someone told me 60,000 students? I don't know if that is right, but I can imagine it.

After Fudan University in Shanghai, it probably has the best reputation. The location is the best of any of the universities in Shanghai (many have campuses in the outer edges of Shanghai now) in relation to the downtown area, although it's just outside the Pearl elevated line and a reasonable distance to the start of the East-West subway line. So even if they didn't pay that well, you could get high paying side jobs quite easily.

I've made some friends with students from that university. The ones I know are quite bright. It also draws a lot more students from outside Shanghai because it's such a strong uni. I think that makes it a better place to teach. It seems pretty big, but 60,000 students? Maybe. The East gate has always been super busy when I've gone by. There are lots of small, inexpensive restaurants by the campus too. There seem to be lots of foreign students studying Chinese there. The female students are supposedly some of the most attractive in Shanghai, but I'm also skeptical of claims like those.

Eion
