|
|
Hello -
I have accepted a position at a college in Barka. They have requested that I get my certificates notarized at the Omani embassy. I live in California and the Omani embassy is in Washington, D.C.
Is there any way around this requirement? Can they be sent by mail? Is this a good idea?
Thanks for your help!

I had the same problem years ago - I lived far away from the Omani Embassy (and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office).
I took the certificates to a notary who bound and stamped the copies. I then sent the notarised copies (registered post) to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office with the appropriate fee and a stamped envelope asking them to forward them to the Omani Embassy. I sent the Omani Embassy the fee and a stamped, self addressed envelope.
Everything was duly stamped and returned within 10 days. I still use the copies today (various stamps have been added over the years by countries I have worked in).
My reasoning was that, by sending the notarised copies, I was sending paper I could easily replace. |

I agree with Sleepwalker.
However because I was in Oman when awarded the MA I had to send the cert and transcript to a relative in UK. It was photocopied then notarised by a solicitor, sent to the FCO and Apostiled. Then returned to me. I then took it to the British Embassy in Muscat who issued a notarised copy. This was then taken to the Oman Ministry of Foreign Affairs also in Muscat where it received its final notarisation.
Long winded process but it worked and I start a new position in August.

Thanks for the info. Mainly I need to know what documents are required. I have:
1) A CELTA degree
2) An AA degree
3) A Masters degree
4) A physical checkup (from last summer), Maybe Ok?
5) Transcripts for MA and AA
Also, does it matter which notary service I use? The embassy gave me a 'state' notary in California, but won't any notary service be ok?
Do you get reimbursed by the school for all these fees? It seems like $50 a document ($20 for notary, $30 for embassy) is standard.
The contact at the school I am dealing with rarely responds to emails and does not answer my questions when she does, so I'm a little confused.
Thanks -

This question is best answered by your employer. I only did my BA and MA. Only SQU asks for any kind of medical and it was not involved in this process. As I understand it, they provide the medical form and your doctor fills it out. End of process. I wouldn't do transcripts unless they specifically request that you do so. I never provided any for Oman employers. (only for one Emirati employer)

Normally part of the process is that you get the papers notarized and then the state must certify that the notary is a legal notary. Perhaps using the notary that they provide allows you to skip the state certification.

Not that I ever heard of... and you missed the charge from your state and the charge from the State Department in DC.

Welcome to the Middle East!!
There are companies that do this process for you, but first you need to tie down what forms your employer requires.

Thanks for the answers. It looks like I'll have to wait until my employer contacts me. I am getting worried since the position is supposed to start in a month.
How long should I wait before finding another job?
When do summer vacations finish usually? I sent an email to the dean a few days ago, but I haven't heard anything from him either.
I'm a little worried about the whole thing.. ;( |
