This is one of many different links carrying this story. The UAE authorities want to suspend the current Blackberry services because the government cannot monitor and/or control how some of them are used.
According to the article, they have ordered Etisalat and Du to come up with alternatives. |

As there are few possessions in this world Emirati students prize more than their phones - and the Blackberry owners are the proudest - it'll be interesting to see how this plays out. |

Big brother is watching, but not listening, time to disable the BB email and messaging facilities! now, the Magic Kingdom is also following UAE in banning the instant message facility of the BB!
I guess Uncle Sam is preparing something secret against Iran, and does not want the information to be leaked!! |

Yeah, right...it's all because Obama wants to invade Iran.
More like...free flow of information is against the government's vision of a developed country. Besides, they don't want their ladies sending love messages abroad.
This is your sleazy UAE government at work:
Last year, BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. criticized a directive by the UAE state-owned mobile operator Etisalat telling the company's BlackBerry users to install software described as an "upgrade" required for "service enhancements."
RIM said tests showed it was in fact spy software that could allow outsiders to access private information stored on the phones. It strongly distanced itself from Etisalat's decision and told users how to remove the software. (excerpt from AP)
Meanwhile, at New York University and the Sorbonne in Abu Dhabi, ACADEMIC FREEDOM WILL REIGN, of course. |

It seems the Blackberry ban will affect visitors as well:

I wonder if they'll let Obama's Blackberry function if he ever pays a visit?
Regards,
