Alright Tokyo [people, I'm looking for a relatively quiet, not so crowded place within a few hours, by train, from Tokyo on weekends. Shocked

I live in western Tokyo, Chofu.

I know about all the popular places like MT. Takao, Chichibu etc etc.

I know this is asking a lot but any ideas?

well there are the Tanzawa mountains which are not far from the Odakyu line.
Many people like to go down to the Izu Peninsula for hiking or to go to the onsens. There are 2,300 hot springs in Izu.
Yamanashi prefecture is not bad. Wine is grown there. I like the town of Kiyosato, which is just south of Nagano.

Stuff it man, do it properly and catch a cheap tour to Hokkaido. Wink

It is beauuuuutiful and definitely secluded.

However, the trouble with going to a secluded place from Tokyo is that you have to come back

I'll be going to Aomor this summer and cycling from there to Nigata. Already did Hokkaido a few years ago.

Just loking for day trips around Tokyo for those weekend when I cant go away and don't want to break the bank.

How's Korea going?

Went for a week in February 2003. I highly reccomend hiking in the mountains near Sokchou on the east coast.

The Korean countryside is pretty nice.

Thanks for the tip. A couple of other people have recommended that. I have next week off and need it... I'm knackered. I think I'll be mooching round the house and getting a boost on my Korean for the most part though. Travelling will come in time...

I live in Ojiya City, Niigata Prefecture which has a population of 40,000. It's not a bad place though. If you are a koi fan, love soba and like going to one of those day-trip onsens then this may be the place for you. Only crappy things are:

1. In winter the snow is really bad and gets freezing cold here.

2. There is a lack of trains on the Joetsu line (they come close to hourly, sometimes 1.5 hourly) so if you miss your train then you're stuck for a while.

There are reasonable places to stay but it depends on what your preferences are.
