Hey! I start training on September 1st as well As far as placement preference, I wasn't really offered any placements more specific than the Kansai region. But I think the whole area is pretty awesome anyways! I asked the Personnel guy that we were put in contact with, which area (Kobe, Kyoto or Osaka) I would be in and he said it is looking like Osaka. Have they given you any housing offers yet?
Look forward to hearing from you! Thanks for posting, I'm glad I found someone in the same training group!

Im in S. Korea finishing up my 2nd year teaching ESL. I want to go to Japan and pursue ECC opportunities. Their site says to have a work visa BEFORE applying. How can I get that from here? Do I just apply for a work visa while Im in Korea at the Japanese consulate? Also, once I apply to ECC, since I am not yet in Japan, will I have a chance, however small, to get anything do you think? I have a BA in English and 2 yrs teaching here in Korea. They say thats all they need, right? I have no cert/TEFL of any kind. Finally, Im here with my wife--she doesnt teach. Can one get housing for onesself AND spouse? Westgate for example told me only single individuals are welcomed. |

No. Since your post history says you're American, there is literally no way for you to get a visa that lets you work prior to securing a job unless you marry a Japanese person or enroll somewhere as a student. Find a better company that will sponsor your visa. It takes almost no effort on the company's part. |

But ECC will sponsor your Visa? They just helped me get mine. I think you might just have to have a visa already if you are trying to apply while already in Japan. The only thing is, I think they only interview in Toronto, maybe Australia, and the UK. Either way, I'd look into it a little more if I were you. Good luck |

There are a few divisions within ECC. ECC Foreign Language Institutes of Japan, ECC Junior, and ECC Best Career are three of these. You do not need a work visa before applying to ECC Foreign Language Institutes of Japan (Gaigo). As JBgroovy wrote, if you are hired, ECC will you apply for your visa.
However, if you would like to work for ECC Best Career, which dispatches teachers to public schools in the Kansai (Osaka, Kyoto, and Nara) area, or for ECC Junior, which offers part-time work, you will need to have a visa prior to applying.
JBgroovy is also correct in pointing out that ECC Foreign Language Institutes does most of its hiring outside of Japan (Canada, Australia and the UK), but it does occasionally hire in country as needs arise. |
