I was just wondering if its too late to get a job teaching english in elementary schools in the HK.

got a geography degree, but am not certified in anything. im assuming they wont take me since im not certified, especially as a TESOL.

do you think its too late to get the job despite not being certified, not having a visa or passport, but having a degree???

im debating to become certified as quickly as possible through this site http://www.onlinetefl.com/tefl-course/ . hopefully its legit. and trying to get the job through this website http://www.teachaway.com/content/teaching-public-schools-hong-kong . hopefully they are legit as well

is it too late since classes are starting in august already, or do i have to wait either till January (new semester) or wait till next august for the new school year.

Like to hear your guys responses, esp the ones that are obviously there.

oh no problem! You'll get one of the best positions. Don't worry about those silly "teaching qualifications" or what is often referred to as "experience". Laughing That is all just so much rubbish.

What schools are looking for these days is: someone with a geography degree, without a passport, and who actually thinks that taking a brief online course would cause them to be "certified". Cool These are the same things that concerned parents look for in a teacher. Smile The local teachers who have graduate degrees and many years of professional teaching experience are looking forward to working with someone like that; mark my words! Smile

You're in da808warrior! No worries! Come on over! The schools are desperate right now; for some reason there are hardly any qualified teachers in Hong Kong.

Hmm-then whats with all the Philipinos I see on my jaunts teaching English in HK now? Surely there must be employment for a graduate from a Canadian university.
OP, dont listen to the drivel that all teachers in HK have been lured away from their presidencies at Ivy league school educational departments. Its the same as elsewhere, qualified and non-qualified persons teaching here, and salaries ranging commensurately. From what others have said on these boards, your qual's wouldnt net you a large payday though (20,000/mo)?

thanks for a legit response, unlike this other fool. if he/ she/ shim is trying to be funny, stop, because you fail majorly at it. lets hope T-cog here isint as dumb as his avatar.

anywayz, so it seems like its still possible to make the august cut off? the site i posted still requires a SF visit and interview beforehand. dont know if you had to go through something like. can they still hire you in january for the second semester, or do you have to wait a full year?

appreciate a real response and not a dumbaz response.

You are definitely too late to start in August and unless you have a TESOL certificate that is accredited by the EDB you won't be able to start at all.
The TESOL cert must have at least 100 hours practical teaching (I think) so you need to make sure that the course you are doing does have a practical component and isn't just online.
You can be engaged by a school on an individual basis but even so your qualifications must be accepted by the EDB for you to be able to work on the NET scheme otherwise you are just regarded as an ELTA and do not get the special allowance and other benefits.

thanks. didnt know if i could do the whole 20 hour online sesh and still get away with it or not. might as well do the right one.

do you know if they hire new teachers for the second semester of the school year in december january? or do you have to wait till next year in august when the school year starts over again. thanks for the input
