Hello all. I have been out of the EFL field for over 2 years. And I have not been working at all due to family issues and fortunately, savings in the bank. My family issue has finally been solved. It is time to get back into the EFL field. Can anyone give me some pointers on how best to explain a long period of unemployment to prospective employers? Feel free to PM and thank you for any sound advice.

If you have substantial experience that you can prove, tell the truth! |

I took a long vacation.
I went to sit on the beach for a year.
I was doing additional study.
In EFL abroad it is not uncommon for teachers to have gap years in their resumes as they take extended vacations for family or travel.

Well....... you could go for being a long term alcoholic in Bangkok (very believable in the TEFL world) and now you have sorted it all out and you want to teach during October fest in Germany.
But really, say you had a very sick parent who required 24 hour care. I don't know if you should blag the parent died, problably better to state a recovery. Get on Google. It shouldn't take long to find a condition which requires 2 years of round the clock aid but recovery being common.
You will be fine. Go for it and just lie. |

Alzheimer's - no recovery, but perhaps entry into a nursing home or, as in my case, another relative offering to take care when the parent finally came out of denial and admitted he needed help.
