Hi all,
My partner and I are planning to travel soon to the USA for a few weeks. We both have FM3s. However my partner's passport will have just less than 6 months remaining when we return to Mexico. We had intended to renew the passport when we returned to Guadalajara.

The question is, does a passport need to have a certain amount of months remaining on it when entering Mexico with an FM3, or does it just need to be valid?

I know a tourist visa needs 6 months remaining on the passport, but does an FM3 change the situation?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Andrew

I think you've got this figured out- perhaps others will have a different opinion. The FM3 gives you permission to exit and reenter Mexico during its period of validity. You should be able to freely enter Mexico, regardless of the expiration date of your passport, but you will not be able to renew your FM3 unless you have a year or more of validity left on it; so, renewal of the passport in a timely fashion will be important, just as you've suggested.

I re-entered Mexico after a visit outside the country, when my passport only had a couple months left. So it can be done. This was last year (which doesn't quite answer your question, "Will my partner have a problem?")

I had the same concern, and asked the airline, who said the consulate should give me that information, and the consulate said it was up to the airline, so at least no one definitely was saying, no, you must have a longer term on your passport.
