hi already working in indonesia but looking at other opportunities and came across a contract that lists a 1 mill rupiah retainer every month to be paid in full upon contract completion.

anyone else ever have this? just seeing if this is the norm out there because in my current situation it is definitely not part of my contract...

i had a school that wanted to do the same thing, but said that they would match it and pay it at the end of the contract. however, if i get fired or terminated the contract i would lose all monies paid into the fund. incidently, the list of reasons for getting fired was endless and included things like failure to say good morning to any student, staff or parent. or if anyone perceived me to be rude in manner, works or expression at anytime. these were immediate termination offenses. needless to say i passed on the job.

i can think of only 2 reasons but i am sure others will think of more:

1. the want to use the money u pay in as your end of contract bonus.

but more likely...

they are a shit organization and using that to force teachers to stay til the end. and the deeper u are into the contract and the more you have to lose, the worse they will treat u.

what was the name of the orgainization? maybe someone here worked there and maybe they are perfectly fine.

don't really want to name names as this point, just putting this out there to see if anyone else has had this experience.

In other words-'I'm looking for help cos I've been presented with this situation, I'd like others to share any experience of this but I don't want to name any names regarding the company.' There are those who want to take but are not interested in the give.

responses like yours are the reason it's so intimidating to post on these boards. people come here looking for a little help and are often met with patronizing comments such as yours.

so what if i didn't name the school? sure, maybe it would be easier if someone had experience with that particular institution and could give me a direct answer, but i was simply looking for a general response to see if this was common practice in Indonesia.

...in my opinion, these forums could really do without the condescension....

Fully agree with you Ang Nic. However, if you run a search you will find that a particular poster's history is full of negativity and/or misinformation. There isn't a positive post in the lot.... so I wouldn't take any notice if I were you.

As to your question. No it isn't normal but I have heard of it happening. I think the school must have been burnt by 'runners' in the past. However, that leaves open the question of why they were losing teachers, etc. In any case, that doesn't excuse the practice... and the misappropriation of money that may follow. There is a very good chance of you never seeing your money at the end, whether you have done anything wrong or not. I would treat with caution....

Yea, it's called a "year-end bonus," lol...

I'm at one of the big Nat Plus schools and yes, they take 10% of our monthly salary "retained salary", returning half at the end of the year and the other half in August (for teachers staying on, or all of it upon contract completion for those who aren't renewing)

Presumably this is to avoid being burnt..our school has had runners in the past. The most recent was a woman who took the entire year's rent money, which is paid in advance at our school, and ran away back to Australia with it. Even among teachers who are all qualified and certified K-12 teachers from back home, there is still the odd bad apple who is prepared to ruin it for the rest of us by ripping off the school.

I am shocked to discover that such skullduggery is going on at a Nat Plus school. Whatever 'bad apples' have done in the past does not excuse treating all the other teachers like criminals, and the practise is certainly of questionable legality.

I wouldn't touch those terms and conditions with a long stick. Perhaps someone could name the school in question.

ok ang-nic-you've hadyour feedback. yes this can happen at National + schools and yes, they are best avoided. Now, how about putting a name to this institution since people have been kind enough to share their experiences and you'd kind of be doing a service of indicating a school to be avoided, or at least everybody is made aware of the situation. To phis-give me the 'misinformation' examples pal? You seem full of it.....
