Most of the positions that I've seen advertised are for full-time work. Is it realistic to think that I could find a company to sponsor a work visa for me if I really only want to work 15-20 hours/week?

I recently got my CELTA, and I have a B.A. in Linguistics, but I have no other teaching experience. One reason that I'm looking for fewer hours is to make sure I can do a good job as a new teacher.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking for part-time work and full-time pay. I realize that for fewer hours I would be paid less. I'm interested in working in larger cities, if that makes any difference in the chance of finding a position like this...

Also, I've seen mention of full-time, semi-full-time, and part-time. What's the difference between semi-full-time and part-time?

Don't know why you haven't seen any ads for part-time work. It's everywhere. The only big caveats about it are that they usually don't sponsor work visas, and you will find it next to impossible to live on one PT job's salary.

Thanks, Glenski. Yes, I should have been more specific. All the non-full-time jobs that I've seen seem to require that you somehow magically already have a working visa. From this I take it to mean that these companies are not willing to sponsor one, and that they figure you are already working elsewhere and just looking for extra hours.

I'm hoping to do some intensive studying of Japanese while I'm there, hence the need for fewer working hours. Also, I'm not expecting the salary for part-time work to cover all my expenses. I've been planning this for a while, so I have some money saved up.

Get married, have your wife teach and then come over on a dependent's visa. Laughing You'll have lots of free time and can make about 1.2 million yen/year tax free.
Maybe it would just be easier to get a f/t job here and then study in your spare time like everybody else.
