|
|
Hello,
I am considering teaching in one of the Oaxacan State Universities, Sierra del Sur or Papaloapan. I have heard that if a position opens up in one of the other campuses, you are not allowed to apply for it or that you must spend one year out of the system before doing so. Could anyone confirm if this is the case.
Also, any information about experiences working in one of the above mentioned universities would be greatly appreciated! |

Welcome to Dave's - You'll probably be reading other Oaxaca posts and pick up information there as well.
I'm not %100 sure of which schools are part of the Oaxaca state system. It would be interesting to know actually.
URSE in Oaxaca has been pretty dysfunctional looking at times. They just recently cut their English teaching staff after a long and difficult certification process (I couldn't explain it!).
UABJO (sp?) in Oaxaca is notoriously dysfunctional. Massive corruption, interdepartmental fights that include equipment stealing etc......bizarre stories that never seemed to stop.
Hopefully others on the board know of better options. Best wishes. |

Any of the SUNEO system schools especially UTM and UMAR are very stable with large English faculties. Papaloapan and Sierra Sur look good on their websites - Any of the websites has the list of all the Universities in the system at the bottom of their opening page. See the thread entitled "impressions of the Oaxaca University system " for a contact at the U of the Papaloapan - I've never been to the Sierra Sur so I don't know much about that region. - the other universities listed are not part of the SUNEO system and the comments speak for themselves. |

Thanks for posting this info. I certainly don't mean to be negative - it just reflects what I happened to see in a limited time in Oaxaca. Again, thanks.

Hi desertanimal. I've worked for the the SUNEO system and about to move from one university to another. There is a rule about teachers changing, probably out of fear of one uni poaching a good teacher from another, but you don't have to be out of the system for a year to move. I left the country for 2 months and worked at a school in the UK and that was fine. Others I know have handed their notice in a month before taking a job at another. I think it really depends on the head of department and how urgent they need a new teacher. |

Hi Orquita,
Thanks for the info! As you have taught in Mxico before, would you happen to know anything about the Universidad Veracruzana system? I understand that the English Department is included within the Humanities Studies and, as such, is well integrated into the main University. Much of what I read about Xalapa attracts me to this city. I hear the winter weather can be a bit depressing, but it seems to be a beautiful location.
Once again, thanks for the info and I hope all goes well this year!

I believe that you need to make 5 posts before the PM function will work for you. |

Thank you Isla Guapa! I think that I have finally sent enough! By the way Orquita, I didn't mean to change the subject of the thread! Perhaps I'll start an Universidad Veracruzana topic! |

Perhaps this is a silly question, for those who have worked in the Oaxacan University System with all this office time....what kind of internet is available? Satellite? High speed? Is it dependable? |

Dependable, moderate speed. Of course, it depends on the campus, usually in the first year or two of a campus there is no internet, at other times there may not be enough server capacity to offer a reasonable speed after a growth spurt in one of the campuses. But MELEE did not rack up thousands of posts posting from her home. She did it all while at work. |

I know a foriegner who worked at the Veracruzana for a year some time ago. But he was placed there by the British Council and not working directly for the Veracruzana. I've also talked with a Mexican at one of the MEXTESOL conventions who worked there. She was a semester by semester contract per teaching hour sort of position with no benefits. |
