MOD EDIT

As I said before, I like my students and the locals in Qassim. I just don't like never seeing a woman's face. As the Stones put it in their most Arabesque of tunes,

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore, I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
...
I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it's been painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black

When I used to stroll through Dhahran Mall, the old Hollies tune "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" would always come to mind! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

It would be nice to do a video of all-veiled Saudi ladies with both of these songs in the background. Any other suggestions for tunes that would be appropriate?

Not off the top of my vacation head, but man, Paint It Black is SO amazing. Just for the music--so sophisticated for 1966. When that starts rocking in my car I feel so cool I think I'm George Clooney racing across sand dunes trying to save the Emir. Actually I'm just speeding down the I-10 to the Katy-Mills Mall near Houston to buy some discounted Nikes. (Less cool). But buyers beware--studies prove putting on the Stones or the Who increases driving speed. No kidding.

I-10 to Katy Mills Mall? How can two lives be so oddly parallel throughout so many years and yet we never see each other?

If you want a hint, think back to flipping a coin for a house. But please don't reveal my identity in any way!

Oh yes, absolutely I know who you are! I'm from CT originally, not Houston, but when I was fairly newly married in 1995 we bought a house in Clear Lake because Houston home prices were (are) so affordable; you can live like a king for $150K.

She's a lovely KL Chinese, by the way, and still lives and works here. I'm only here because my car and some stuff are here. Soon I'm off to San Fran to meet my Bangkok gf (no, she's a government officer, not a "Hey Joe, you numble one, you likee good time?" ha ha)

I'm nowhere near Katy myself, but it's complicated. Rather talk about it in a PM, ok?

John, you really did spend too much time in KSA. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Don't jump to such conclusions...or are you just berating us for going off-topic?

Male and female colleagues end up teaching together all over the world...outside of KSA, of course. Wink

Dear Mia,

Oh, I probably did spend too much time there, but rather then "jumping to any conclusion," I was just teasing you guys. Twisted Evil

It's a small EFL/ESL world, after all.

Regards,
John

Lord ...Why did you send Shiekh Nano to Qassim, to the Black Hole?
Why did you make a black hole in his mind?
Shiekh Nano is dreaming of Black color which is the color of darkness, and misery..
Why did you send him to Qassim, the land of darkness and spinless!
Black is the color of the sins ..

Lord, the heart of Sheikh Nano is black like a coal...
Lord, clean his heart and mind with white camel milk ...
Lord, make him escape Qassim with exit-only visa before he dies in the darkness of the Black Oil ..

Amen, Amen, Amen.

I've searched for, but cannot find, a story I came across years ago about a small-town sheriff who was also the local radio station DJ. He programmed the music specifically toward getting people to speed through the local trap. In this particular instance, the culprit to whom he divulged this secret was a journalist, and they both had a good laugh over the song that got the journalist pulled over: "Radar Love."
