I seem to recall someone mentioning this a while back. But there seem to be precious few jobs about at the moment. My contract exprires in a couple of months, and I have been puting my CV on the board here at Dave's. My last ad got absolutely no responses, except from recruiters! I also put a lot of thought into my ads, so as to give employers the best possible picture in the minimal words. I wasn't doing that three years ago. At that time I wrote a heap of rubbish and got 80 responses! It can't be too good for the average ESLer, as I am better qualified and a lot more experienced than most teachers here.

Well HH, if you want to work in a small city just north of Guangzhou you can PM me. There will be three or four openings here in August or September. I'm here with my wife and her sister and we're all going home due to promises to be home for next Christmas. I would love to stay though. If you like the big cities with all the western amenities this place is not for you, but starting wage is 7000RMBs. I have lots of newbie friends that have found work all over the country so I dont think its dried up here yet. With your experience it should'nt be a problem. Here I teach primary and middle school...maybe not up your alley Maybe recruiters are taking over the scene here, thats the impression I'm getting. Dont just rely on Daves though, but I'm sure I dont have to tell you that

I was chatting with a recruiter a few weeks back and he mentioned that quite a few schools that used to hire directly are coming to him nowdays! Most of them have been burnt out by some FE that pulled off a midnight run because their hot water didn't work at midnight or some other stupid reason!

They want someone that will be responsible and the recruiters are the perfect guinea pigs! Even if the school f+cks up, they still get their money back if the FE runs off or they get another FE asap....some schools think it is worth paying 3 to 5 grands for that!!

Anyone wishing to access the eslcafe CV list must now PAY $$ MONEY It is not cheap.

That's why school's don't use it anymore .. and hence your lack of responses.

Don't sweat - there are many many more jobs than suitable teachers

I am sure everyone who posts here knows of at least a few openings
(If we could clone ourselves, we could be working a dozen jobs)

It definitely is easier for schools to get replacements now, and a lot more difficult to find a good job if you are a TEFLer.
Believe me - or not, at your peril!

Thanks for the advice Roger - but certainly no peril here.
It seems to me there are plenty of options - perhaps the situation is true for GuangDong but certainly not so here.

Another factor to consider is that september (the next major hiring time) is still a long way ahead of us! Most unis and public schools are off during the summer term and that is when some TEFL either travel or do some type of summer camps!
I suspect that most private schools have approached local FE to know if they will be there this summer or not before they decide to advertise! My wife and I have been taken to dinner by every private school in town over the past 3 weeks to try and convice us to teach there this summer!!!

This is also a strange time where schools have other worries: ban4 is coming up right after the May day.... they're busy preparing the kids for that...they'll deal with recruitement at a later date!

My school will have a couple positions open this summer, it's up in the north at a kindergarten adn they advertise on TEFL.com

I'd agree that employers are changing their search methods and relying more on recruiters. The process is similar to industrial companies hiring workers through temp agencies - I used to temp at warehouses during my uni days.

The net effect is that you have a steady flow of replaceable workers / teachers that the employer can select from and hire. Given the way the industry runs here, this trend should be no surprise at all. Even without recruiters, you have a situation where Chinese management always moves the goalposts and seldom plans ahead. Meanwhile, the high FT turnover rate tops up the pool of replaceable teachers.

Recruiters allocate this flow more efficiently and try to stabilize relations in the short-term, but it's just another way of dealing with the symptoms of complex problems between employers and FTs.

As mentioned above, I suspect this is the dry season as far as job openings go. It's coming up to the end of the school year, and no one is going to opt out of a contract at this time.

I have to admit that I'm a bit fussy as far as jobs go these days - I'm not just going anywhere for the hell of it. I had that attitude a few years back, but I'm getting a bit older and wiser (or maybe more selfish and lazy! ) I also refuse to work for those low paying jobs. So that cuts me out of the picture for many positions.

I'm also in the sticks now, and am bored out of my brain! So I want to go somewhere where I can have the odd chat with a foreigner or chill out at a cofee bar.

Working in China is not a job. It is a gig. Jobs give benefits. All you get is a salary and maybe an apartment. You will eventually get screwed, usually sooner than later. Please do not refer to them as JOBS
If you want a job, go home

I make 5000 RMBa month. I do post from home. Dunce is subjective but at times yes. Anymore angry man?
