I think I need to tell them I can't afford a ticket if I must wait any longer. I mean, I still need to go to the embassy. |

I can understand the sentiment, but I don't think that it's universal.
At one school where i worked, the Foreign Affairs office was very concerned about their foreign teachers. Payment was always made on time. In fact, when the FAO moved to a campus several miles away from the FT's apartments, the FAO came to our apartments to pay us. Mail arrived on-time, and it too was delivered to us. Some FTs stayed on for another year, and they were given round trip tickets to go home and return after the winter holiday. Contracts were for ten months. Those who stayed on over the summer were paid for two months AND they were given opportunities to work summer jobs.
On the other hand, another school where I worked was absolutely horrible and non-responsive to the FT's needs to the point that it took the school over a week to fix a plumbing problem that left a half-inch of water in the apartments. (There were other problems too--- much worse problems).
This same school, however, had a foreign languages department that was quite responsive to suggestions and the needs of its FTs and did everything possible to include its FTs in faculty activities. If there was a problem with the FAO, the dean interceded.
Certainly, finding FAOs and schools that are capable of attending to the needs of its FTs is hit-and-miss. Good ones are out there, but finding them may be difficult.
One possible reason for the sloppiness is that in China, there seems to be a workaround for glitches. Many administrators are completely unaware of the fact that it's a completely ball game outside of China. I think that they fail to realize that in the west, there isn't the same fluid sense of time and urgency at play as there is in China. |

Yeah, I am worried too. I heard from my Uni on Friday that the invite letter is unlikely to arrive until mid Sept - considering we are supposed to be starting work before that, I cannot understand what is going on!!! |

If you are to teach at a university, it is common for the Freshman to begin their classes later than the other years. Generally, the Freshman have 2 to 4 weeks of military training.
Some schools will have the Freshman begin classes after the October 1st holiday, so that could be the reason.
You could think of it as a nice way to offer a 10 month contract online and then only pay you for 9 months since you won't have any classes in the 1st month!!
If by chance the Freshman classes begin around 9/15, which in your case doesn't seem to be what will happen, it is a good excuse to only pay you half a month's salary. |

so.................if they ask you to be there to begin on the
first of september, which is the starting date of the contract...
...where would you be in terms of housing allowance if classes
begin on the 15th? |

This is all just a preview of the fun and games yet to come!
Perhaps you should consider it an omen? |

This could be very well true but on the other hand. I was in a school and the freshman had not even arrived yet. So classes started with the Sophomore classes and stayed this way until the 9th week of school and maintaining 12 hours a week per the contract. And then a switch was made for the remainder or second 1/2 of the term for the freshman classes. The Sophomore classes would shift and take on their secondary foreign language of French.
That is more logical way to deal with such instances. |

I waited a long time for my invitation letter so I could apply for my visa. I pushed the school to do it faster and it still took about 5 weeks. I have now received it and I got my visa by mail too. I will leave in one week. I think it is the government that takes so long with the letter and work permit. Good Luck! |

Applying for your visa at the last minute is good practice for all the last minute things that you're going to have to deal with when you start your new job. |
