I included this in my original copy-and-paste litany, even though it wasn't part of the original list of 500 from which I borrowed. (There are several there that I inserted and that were "original." ). I can't understand where this awful habit comes from, but it's common amongst many of the younger "experts" who are interviewed on National Public Radio to provide "insight" into whatever the news story happens to be. I don't hear it anywhere else, and NPR seems to be home to affectations of every sort. I'm guessing that it's a way of setting up a conjecture as something more substantial than it really is. I hope they're not teaching it in school, but it does sound like something professors might use, especially if they're teaching from either the Socratic method or, worse still, from an Atlas complex. Whatever the reason, it's right up there with the "croaky voice" pet peeve for me.

'A personal day'.

Really! Is any explanation needed as to why this is a most peeving phrase?

Urgh! I have just peeved all down my shirt.

Has anybody ever heard this one? What's it supposed to mean?

Yes of course. Means something like not teaching somebody who already knows. Vaguely along the lines of preaching to the choir.

Why? Does it peeve you?

Yeah, it does. I thought it was something kinda like "preaching to the choir", but I don't get it. Grandmas are assumed to be able to suck eggs very well? Why? Lack of teeth?

'Old'. As in, "Yo, this thread is like done. It's getting old already." Or similar words to that cretinish effect.

Don't know what is wrong with plain old boring...

'To have an axe to grind'. Commonly misused phrase. Peeves the bejesus out of me. Far worse than an egg-sucking Granny!

Wash it all down with voddy, Spiral old chum. You'll soon feel better. Can't face the day any other way myself...
