Here's a recent BBC article about another expat caught in the UAE's debt honeytrap. If you're moving out of the country, make sure you get and keep receipts and bank account statements certifying all loans & credit card accounts are paid off (and bring them with you if you ever re-enter the country, just in case...).

He had US$9300/34000 Dhs worth of USED furniture!!! Since you normally only get about 20-50% of what you paid at best, it is obvious how he got himself in trouble.
Why would someone invest that kind of money in furnishing a home in a foreign country if one doesn't have significant savings somewhere that could pay off the debt. Why didn't he sell his car to add to the furniture? I suppose he owes on that too.
People do tend to make their own beds... and now his is in a bush...
