Hey there,

I saw that you're in Queretaro. I live here. As for your questions about the FM-3 process:

You'll need to go down to immigration and get a list of the FM-3 requirements. This paper will tell you the costs (and you'll be given the forms to make the payments at the bank), how many photos, and other such paperwork. To get all this info, you'll need to take a number down there and wait, most likely an hour or two. It's possible that all of this info is online now, but I doubt it. And it's always better to speak to a person. The forms, at very least, will need to be picked up at immigration. It's not much of a hassle, just time, if you do it right. I've done it, learned the ropes, and am actually going for citizenship next year.

If you don't mind me asking, where are you working? I ask because I work independently in the city (after having worked for quite a few language schools in the area and being disappointed). I've received a lot of references from clients and am looking for another teacher to work with me. If you're curious, we could meet and talk and see if this is a possibility for the two of us.

Go to:

http://www.inm.gob.mx/index.php/page/tramites

It's in Spanish, but it gives you the information.

However, I agree that you should not wait because migration is waiting for you to submit your documents. So, go to the migracion office as soon as possible and ask what is required.

There should have been a list of the documents you need to submit on the form you filled out. Nothing will happen until you take in your documents and sign the form. Feel free to PM me, I have translated and walked a number of people through the FM3 and FM2 process. It isn't hard to do, but you must submit the things they ask for, though for some things there is more than one possible acceptable document. You really don't need a lawyer to do it for you, even if you don't speak Spanish, just take someone along to translate for you.

I am going through the process of renewing my FM3 for the umpteenth time. The bureaucrat at INM also instructed me to complete the application on line and to take note of the application number that was ascribed me after filling it out and bring that number to INM. This will facilitate their looking for your info on file.
As so many of the immigration offices have varied rules, it`s imperative that you ask them what is necessary to continue your application.

I just renewed mine again as well, but for the online segment, I was told to complete the form online, print it out, and bring it in. No mention of a number to note down.

You're covered, Guy, the number's on the form. When you present the form, they'll give you a password to use to check the progress of your application through the system.

I don't personally like this new way of doing things, but they may find it more convenient, somehow.

I DO like that there are a number of posters to this forum who prefer to go through this process themselves, and by doing so, can tell us all the little ins and outs of how it's done!

As a result of reading, carefully, everything ever written here about how to get an FM3, with permission to work in "manner independiente", I was able to get one without a problem, though I'd never applied for any FM3 before. Even now, working full time for a state university, my FM3 with permission to work in "manera independiente" still serves me well: immigration again reiterated that no other permission is required, regardless of what work I accept as an English teacher, when I asked them, recently.

When it's time to renew, I plan to ask for an FM2, though I will have been here only a year in FM3 status, owing to a provision in the immigration law that says those who are making a contribution to the development of the country can ask for an accelerated immigration process. About December, I'll be able to tell you what they said.

Yeah, they give you a 'piece' number and a NUT - Numero Unico de Tramite, not a cacahuete - to check on the status online.

The DF office has been re-organized with a new ventanilla express and overall better information, IMO. Didn't take me long at all.

If you read the book "Distant Neighbors" perhaps you recall that the author stated that the only two efficient and non-corrupt government agencies are Immigration and the Bank of Mexico.

I'd love to speed up the process for getting an FM2. Right now Im on the second prrroga of my FM3. How do you plan to prove you're "making a contribution to the development of the country" ?

I submitted my FM-2 for a change of activity and change of address. Checked online and it says that I need to go in, but that it's not ready. Spoke to my friend at immigration and was told that I need to submit a marriage constancia and copies of my latest tax payments, both of which were not given to me as initial requirements and nothing was mentioned when all my forms were received. Do I think it's more convenient? The only change I see is that you can check the status of your visa online. I'll still need to go in to pick up the constancia and return yet again to submit it. If the status wasn't online, I would have gone in anyway by now to check and would have been told that it wasn't and been given the constancia. Not a big difference. Same number of trips.

I thought one of the changes was that you no longer had to report changes in employment. Or do you have to update your information because you are renewing? If your FM2 is based on marriage, it has always been a requirement that you offer proof that the marriage is ongoing, I believe. I am by no means an expert, but have helped a number of people translate and submit their documents.
