Quote:
"Logic is in the eye of the logician."
Gloria Steinem

What is a logician? Something like a magician?

I mean, exuse me, I actually did quite well on my verbals on the SAT and GRE, but this word must of escaped me?

I did find it in one of three dictionaries, and it didn't have a definition, but I don't think I have ever heard it used in my life. Has anyone actually ever used this as a real world in their life?

Sincerely,

Ignorant in China

Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused

Oh, PS, I mean, has anyone ever used it in the sense that Steinem uses it. I can see it being used as far as talking about someone who ORGANIZES things for a large group / military.

Dear arioch36,
A logician, in the context of Steinem's quote, would, I think, simply be someone who is attempting to logically analyse some problem/issue. So, the meaning would, I'd say, be similar to this familar adage:

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

My guess is that she's implying that since none of us is free from subjectivity, pure logic is impossible. Our conclusions will always be tainted by individual prejudice.
Of course, since I'm using logic to analyse this quote, I suppose I must be wrong.
Regards,
John

Slat Oops, sorry, Mr. Slat, did you get that answer from a randomly computer generated listing? Now everytime I hear one of your answers I will always think twice, is it real, or is it comexe?

I really did think that piece was the typical grad school drivel.

On to weighty matters, what would logician actually mean? What does the suffix "ian"perform? Someone who studies logic like a theologian studies theo? Or like a magician practices magic?

Can you really study logic? If pure logic is impossible (except for Spock, when he finally accepted his human half) can you truly be a logician?

Would you use logician this way, or as one who is very good at planning and organizing? Which would be proper?

I understand what my good friend Gloria is attempting to say.

Thanx for the help.

Sincerely,

Cofused in China ( Not that being in China helps)

The Shorter Oxford English dictionary gives these meanings:

logician /l@"dZIS(@)n/ n.
LME. [(O)Fr. logicien, f. as LOGIC + -ICIAN.]
1 A writer on logic; a student of logic. LME.
2 A person skilled in reasoning. L16.
1 mathematical logician etc.

The word is also given by Merriam-Webster, though without a meaning.

I ahve never used it and haven;t heard it since University..I was considering a Philosophy "minor" and one of the profs said to take such and such classes if I was interested in being a logician. Shocked Word sort of stuck in my mind. Logic is a branch of Modern Philosophy so anyone doing a thesis is -I guess--a LOGICIAN.

Be warned there is math involved--a lot of it.

'Tis true, 'tis pity, 'tis pity, 'tis true. Or something along those lines.

I have heard it, and maybe have used it in the sense of a math logician, but if that is the normal sense of the word, then it is directly opposite the meaning Ms. Steinem is trying for.

So what is Dave trying to say here? Or am I trying to read too much into it?

Confuse as normal in Henan.

Isn't a person who is good at planning and organising (or who gets paid to do so) a logistician? Being from logistics and all..

Just a thought..

Seriously, I thought a person who was very good at planning was a logician ...good at organizing thing in a careful, logical way, also for math, especially good old geometry.

I looked for the word logistician in my dictionaries. Couldn't find it. Is it a real word?

Sure! Why not?

In Australia, you can get work in logistics, which is basically organising transport and ordering and stuff..

But I looked up on dictionary.com and it said:

Quote:
logistic ( P ) Pronunciation Key (l-jstk) also logistical (-t-kl)
adj.
Of or relating to symbolic logic.
Of or relating to logistics.

So maybe they're the same thing.. But I'm all for inventing new words, especially for writing those paradigm-shifting essays... Wink
