I was speaking to a Spanish friend who lives in Melilla... he was telling me that state school secondary teachers make about 1800Euro in Spain and about 2500euro in Melilla. He also said the ave salary is 1700Euro a month and government jobs pay more... is this true? What is the ave salary for people in your part of Spain...

Is 1200euro net a good salay for Spain? I am worried that if people who work in shops and private companies? In Italy it's abot 800 - 1000 euro and I thought Spain would be less.

I got 1200 net for a private school (teaching adults, business English mostly) in 2009. I lived in a small town with a lower cost of living/rent, so it was fine for me. I had 27 contact hours per week.

Friends in the same town earnt about 100 euros more and had fewer contact hours (20) and a block (ish) timetable but they had to teach 100% kids' classes, so I think I preferred my deal as one of my hours was way easier than one of theirs.

Spain definitely pays more than Italy. Salaries for the above (not govt) schools seem to range from 1000 to 1700 euros. I don't see why they'd offer a higher salary to a newb. I also don't know if 1200 will suffice in expensive cities. Where will you be located? Are you prepared to have a flatmate?

Hi, the highest wages for all the jobs I've been looking at have been 1300 for 25 hours a week, which is about the average. That's 13 euro an hour.

If a job pays less than that check out the cost of renting in that area, because often that makes up for it.

There seem to be a lot of good jobs in Melilla, if you don't mind being on the north cost of Africa.

The salaries for civil servants in Ceuta and Melilla are higher than on the mainland. A "normal" language teacher wouldn't earn anything like that (unless you're actually working for the state and have managed to get transferred down there) - jobs are pretty sought-after there: a student of mine's husband is a policeman and dreams of getting sent down there.

Sadly, wages for language teachers here are much more modest, especially when you take into account the fact that most schools don't pay holidays, and those that do almost never pay over summer.

That said, with hard work, lots of contact building and as many private classes as possible, you can earn 1500 to 2000 euros a month during the 9 months that there is work. There are long-termers here who manage to feed their families, or at least make a decent contibution to a dual income couple. And if you can stand all the cat-herding, then you can always get into DOS/management positions.

Spain is not a very good place to save up: Asia's the place for that (and then later possibly the middle east if that's your bag) - it's much more of a place to enjoy the experience, have fun, eat great food, meet people, learn the language and generally soak up the sun. Working like crazy here will earn you reasonable cash, but then if that gets in the way of enjoying the place then it sort of loses its point.
