I had 2 job offers from Vietnam. Vung Tau and Hai Phong. I was wondering if anyone experienced any of these places in Vietnam at all and which one is more relaxed to live? lol I know it is a bit of a personal question but I would like to hear different opinions. I am sort of in the middle of these 2 offers right now. I was a bit scared of going to Vietnam at first but since I am from Turkey and I can see the similarities between the 2 Countries, I think it should be fine. Now I just cant decide which city I should go for.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks

I have never worked in either Turkey or Vietnam but I've visited both countries. While you are probably familiar with seeing people in poverty in Turkey you will see a lot more in Vietnam and SE Asia in General.
HCMC (or Saigon) is a bustling, crowded city full of scooters. The advantage of living near there is that if you have any major issues to deal with then Saigon is the best place to be to resolve those issues. (They can include medical, dental, banking....the list goes on).
Once you are outside of the two major cities, Hanoi and HCMC then it's generally more difficult.
Vung Tau is a short distance away from HCMC and it takes about 2 hours by speed boat and these travel back and forth several times a day. I was there for about 3 days and found it easy to navigate. The beaches are decent although not nearly as nice as a few other places I have visited. (Hoi An and Phu Quoc were the top two IMO).
I have never been to Hanoi or northern Vietnam but overall I think you would be better off starting in Vung Tau. It would also be a good spot to learn to ride a scooter. Trying to drive one in Saigon, unless you are a real expert, is pretty much suicidal.
If you take the job in Vung Tau then you should first spend a few days in Saigon and learn where a number of things are. Grab a hostel in the Pham Ngu Lao / De tham backpacker area for 10-20 bucks a night. The hawkers will be all over you but just mind your own business. Most hostels will have local maps.
HTH. Good luck. |

Well, I have never been to Vung Tau but I have heard nothing but good things about it personally....
.....I had a few friends who lived in Hai Phong and they had NOTHING good to say about the place. I had visited these friends on a few occasions and, using my own observation, I had found that A) - Hai Phong is boring and B) - it is unpleasant!
Seems pretty cut-and-dried..... |

| Hai Phong is a much larger city, so certainly you could find a lot more of some kinds of things there. A lot more people to see and meet up there. They both have ocean near by, and HP has some much nicer tourist areas near by. HP has the moderation of the weather, some almost consider it a winter, although it does not freeze. If you drive a motobike, the cool weather may be a liability though. If you like older buildings, the north is better. This is one of those questions that really cannot be answered properly without a lot more detail as to what you seek. I found HP more interesting and more attractive from a tourist's point of view. VT may be better if you want to feel semi retired. I liked them both, but from my point of view, HP is more interesting. |
