I am a American born Chinese, would it be quite difficult for me to find a teaching job in Taiwan? I heard from my friend that most schools in Taiwan tend to employ a Westerner or Caucasian instead of a Asian.

I am also a University fresh graduate, I do not have much experience in teaching. When I was young recieved half of my education in a Chinese speaking country and another half in US, despite that I am fluent in English. How likely will I succeed in finding a teaching job in Taiwan??

I'm not an ABC, but I am an African American in Taiwan and can tell you that being a non-white makes the job hunt significantly more difficult. I was actually hired by one of the popular chain schools, but was let go after parents started complaining about their kids being taught by a black teacher. Unfortunately even if you can find a progressive boss, the parents are the ones you really have to win over. Sadly, it's a business and they prefer to see white faces in the classroom, especially considering how much bushiban lessons are.

The good news is that things are starting to improve over here, especially for Chinese Americans. If you check out tealit.com I've been seeing a lot of posts looking for ABC teachers. As well, ACI (asian consultants international) is a really great consulting agency that has helped some of my non-white friends find placement over here. Hope this helps!

Are you in Taiwan? Most schools do not hire you unless you are available for a face to face interview. It does not matter whether you are Asian, African-American, or white. It is difficult to find a job if you are not in Taiwan.
