What are the minimum entry level credentials for ESL teaching in the Middle East?

Which country offers the best option for first-time teachers?

I know the gulf countries require more credentials than others.

Also, does having knowledge of Arabic make you more marketable to recruiters in this region?

Thanks everyone!

Having a knowledge of Arabic won't get you a job, but it can make life easier for you in the countries that are best for newbies... which is North Africa (Morocco or Egypt) or the Levant (Syria, Jordan, or Lebanon).

If you try a search of these countries here on the board, you will find pros and cons of both areas. The pay will be from low to very low.

You are correct that the Gulf isn't for newbies or those without good credentials and/or experience.

Degree. TEFL certification or an MA in Teflology. Two years experience. (More is better).

Some employers actively discourage those with PhD's. If you admit to an ability in Arabic you will be eternally assigned to Beginners' Classes.
