Tailored clothes are a dream- For a shirt for example, buy the material yourself (short sleeve need 2 mtrs, long need 3 mtrs) from a market- Tailor should charge about 100,000 or UNDER to make it, and it will fit like a glove. I NEVER buy off the peg now as the tailored stuff is so good, and you get to pick the material.
Trousers? Same story- Tailored is much cheaper than most off the peg at home, and fit well- After material, expect to pay about 150,000 for a GOOD tailor to make trousers. |

Can you recommend a tailor? |

I live in Hanoi- No idea of the name, but the one who lives near me! Not much help? Look around- there are bound to be lots in your area- Ask locals and ask for quotes- Get ONE item made and if its great- give him/her more business. Its a suck it and see situation- I am lucky in that my good woman negotiates such things.
The really good tailors tend to be hidden away in little holes in the wall in back alleys, so the ones with big brassy shop fronts have overheads that are built into the prices they quote you.
Back alley family businesses- best by far. |

Thanks for the tips, though I'm in HCMC. I've been using a tourist-oriented place. I'm happy with their work and prices, but would still prefer to shave a few bucks of my pants-bill.
My girlfriend's male relatives (Vietnamese) pay as much as I do, which surprised me. Many of the smaller shops in D3 are as expensive, if not more, than my touristy place in D1. |
