I think he probably mis-typed, and meant to say he saves $20 per month in China, but accidentally typed two EXTRA ZEROS, lol... |

I do like China, but also you seem to have narrowed it down to Korea, Japan and China.
Of those three countries, you will have the best lifestyle in China, because your money goes the farthest. I have never been to Korea, but it is widely regarded as the least desirable of the three - just a 'do it for the money' place. Japan is flooded with teachers, and you will be limited to a tiny apartment.
Jobs are plentiful in China, the pay is pretty good (I save about $2000/mth, while eating in restaurants for every meal, taking taxis everywhere, and drinking several times a week), and there is so much to see in China compared with the comparatively small nations of Korea & Japan.
You want us to help make the decision for you, so I'm helping as much as I can.
Welcome to China! |
I agree! I think I'll see you all in China! |

No, I dont believe the 2,000 USD idea for a second. If I could save $250 a month I might be perfectly satisfied. Just enough to get me home or to my next gig. |

| If you get a part time job $500 to $1000 in savings seems possible in China. |

| I mean a university job with an apartment. That will cover your expenses. A second job will be all savings. |

Is it true that your work visa in China will allow you to legally work at more places than just your ESL job? Or am I getting my countries crossed again? |

| I am not sure it will allow you to work at more than one school but from what people say things like this are overlooked. At the very least you can teach in a company when you are not teaching university classes. But be aware you have to move to a large city to do that. |

I wouldn't pick a country in terms of savings. I picked China because after living in Korea I wanted a quiet laid back place to weather out this little recession that seems to be going on. Korea is just too bipolar of a place for me to want to go back.
Little did I know, 2.5 years later I'm still waiting here in China. Luckily, I managed to weasel my way into middle management at my language center with the idea that it would look better on my resume. Though, seriously I doubt either a ESL teacher reference or an ESL management reference will get much of a notice.
Pick a country because the place resonates with you the most. You really don't want to be trapped in a country that you just don't want to be in. Be absolutely sure you want to come to China, because it can be a hell of a lot of work and hassle at times as I'm sure Japan can be the same. I won't even get started on how frustratingly annoyingly moronic Korea can be, as I don't want to spend the rest of the day ranting and raving about the place.
So, chill out, think hard about it, and go to place that you get the best vibe from. In the end remember all three of the countries are in close proximity. Moving from one to the other isn't that big of a deal. |

No, your visa will not allow you, but most universities don't care what you do for after school work. Language centers, now that is a different story all together. |

| My advice would be to go to China. If you don't want to go to China come to Taiwan. But currently I think there are more opportunities in China. If I don't go back to the US, I may move to Hangzhou next August. |

Glad I convinced you Adam - welcome!
There has been some skepticism with regard to my pay etc - so allow me to explain. I have a bachelor's degree and an ESL certificate. It may help that I was a full-time English teacher back home for 3 years. This is my second gig in China. Initially, I was on 10,000RMB, a year later I'm on 12,000 + free apartment. I also live in a second tier city - wouldn't save as much in SH or BJ.
I teach only 16 hours a week and have no marking or even very much planning to do, now it's familiar to me. However, my employer is truely awful. I often call this the worst school in China (which is saying something!) - I will fill you guys in when my contract is over.
So looking at the end of my contract, I have a big dilema: I hate it here, but I will have to take a big plunge in income or increase in hours, if I leave. That said, you will live very comfortably in China, and there is much more to this place than money. |

12,000 a month still only comes to $1,700, not $2,000, and that's before any bills or food. Do you do privates as well? |

| One final question: Can you get a job at OMEIDA in Yangshuo WHILE IN china? I kind of want to take a short trip to China first as a fact finding mission, and wonder if I would need to return to the States adn go BACK to be employed there. Or if I can just apply and begin my term while already there on a Tourist Visa. |
