Distance education degrees from Western universities (even prestigious ones) are not accepted in the Gulf because the Gulfian administrators know such degrees are c r a p.... Only if the concerned degree holders had aspired to acquiring the degrees on site from the amazing universities in the Gulf, everything would be peachy! |

Just to put in my 2 halalas worth (or is it fils now?!?!)
From what I have heard from friends as well as on this very thread, giving employers the benefit of the doubt, hoping things can/might/will (or any other modal verb for that matter!) change does not usually happen.
And I think it's a tad harsh to say that online/DL degrees are c-rap, as many people bust their balls to work towards one. (Somewhat?) Words of consolation are that I think people out in the Gulf don't accept them as there are quite high (theoretical) chances that people have cheated/plagiarised to obtain these quals.
So to summarise. I am not saying that most people cheat and plagiarise to get such quals. However, the mindset out here can be 'well, there's every shance he/she shatted (sic), so they brobably did!!!' - y'all get me?! |

My post was sarcasm... if it wasn't clear to you ^. VS and NCTBA got it
How do you know the reason they don't accept them is because they think people might have sheeted?
And talking about degrees being worthless because of sheeting, >80% of the Gulf Arab students' degrees are worthless, whether they get them from the Gulf, or from the West.
And this issue is close to my heart because I did 8 out of 10 courses for my M.S. on campus (US) and did the remaining 2 via DE from Saudi (I watched all the lecture videos, bought the books, did the exact same HW and took the same exams as on campus students, and had the same deadlines).
Now, here is the story: I was hired by a famous/notorious university in Saudi (the most 'popular' one on the Saudi board) before I finished my M.S., i.e., I was hired on the basis of my B.S. (also from US). Once I finished my M.S., I was not rehired; my HOD said they don't want people with DE degrees!
Here is the twist: I actually only taught just for the fall semester there, and left in January so that I could do the remaining 2 courses. My HOD was literally begging me to stay, and was offering me support to finish my degree. I still left, because it was too hard to do the assignments at the end of the day. When I reapplied in June with the M.S. behind me, he had changed his tune . And if I was hired initially on the basis of my B.S., why couldn't I be hired again on the same basis?
That experience clearly shows the absurdity of the Gulf. |

Errrr....yeah! I knew you were joking...ahem!
Basically, this is what someone involved in recruitment at an higher education establishment in the K of H told me and he often consults with the Dean about people's CVs. It may not be representative, but I can imagine many others out there having the same mindset. |
