We are moving to Saigon in 4 days and I will be on the hunt for a used automatic scooter. Is it possible to buy a decent scooter for under $400? Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Randy

you can do a search and find this covered recently in quite a bit of detail. Craigslist is a good start. If you want to go under $400, you can find those in some of the markets, not necessarily on CL. I have a xe om that can take you around if you like, you can get a decent supercub for about $300 or so, you can get a more beat up one for less, and you can get a restored one for about $450 or so. Most of these bikes here have a manual shift but not a manual clutch. So you are gearing up and down with your foot, but not manually clutching. Most of these folks just start in higher gears and don't shift much, they are not really trained on shifting. It is best to shift the thing manually of course. Do the search to get details on the bikes, it really depends on what excites you. The supercub is considered the greatest motorcycle ever made, but it is discounted here, it does not exude class, so people with any status generally avoid them, they are trying to upgrade their self esteem with pricier motorbikes. Some of the aficionados here appreciate them, but since they are used here as garbage scows and whatnot, most people do not see them as high class bikes. |

Mark,
Where would you recommend me buying a supercub? At this price could I buy an automatic bike? Give me a ring 0163 211 9801. Thanks for your help.

This guy restores old bikes, and comes up with some very stylish bikes.
You could only get a very basic, low power, restored cub off him for $450:

Bear in mind that they are small, and two tays on a cub will look pretty damn funny, more so if you're putting along with 65cc.
I doubt very much that you'll find an automatic bike for $400. You might be able to hunt down a second-hand Wave.
Personally, I decided to buy a new bike from an actual Honda shop (three free servicings, warranty, legit paperwork in my girlfriend's name). I can recoup some of the cost, when/if I leave. $1000 for a nice new Honda Wave RSX:

If you have a VN friend you could buy a copy of "Mua Ban" and possibly find one. But you might have to redefine "decent" in the process.
Good luck and happy hunting! |
