Well, I'm 37 and I share a house with 3 adults. I consider myself an adult also... It's one of the prices (among many) most of us pay for working in TEFL.
I suppose if you're really territorial and need that much space to yourself, you'd better go find a better-paying occupation. |

| I think my wife and 2 kids might object to sharing our house with strangers. |

Yea, like I told the maid when she complained about having to sleep in the lavatory cystern. A small price to pay for the privilege of cleaning up after me! |

The original poster asked for costs for a single person. Feel free to post your family costs. |

So you assume that single people should share accommodation ? That would certainly make things cheaper but is it acceptable ?
One of the reasons that I prefere the ME as a place to work is that the accommodation is usually better than in the "Real Third World" ! |

Clearly it works for some people, but not for others. The OP was looking for some idea as to basic living costs. Shared living space is basic; solo living space is a luxury. Even in western countries many (if not most) homeowners have a rented basement suite or roommates. |

| I would have thought that for anyone on their first job in a particular country sharing a house has its advantages. Those who have been there a while can steer the newbie through the everyday pitfalls and mysteries of the new place. I'm fairly territorial but I'd rather spend the first couple of months in a new country in shared housing. |

The problem there is that you then create and encourage an expectation from the employer :"Oh, EFL teachers - they share accommodation."
My rule is still NEVER SHARE - EVER ! |

| At my age I expect some privacy. If you want to live like characters in "Friends" so be it, but do not expect others to do the same ! |

I'd disagree, some homeowners have rented suites, but no where near 50%. Furthermore, a homeowner can choose who that tenant will be. |

Sharing a place overseas is a real crap shoot, you don't know who'll get. We had an older alcoholic lady as a roomie in Korea. Many years later when we tried to get in contact with her in NZ, we found out her whole life was one big lie. Everything she told us about her past life was a lie and she was trying to run away from her past. Very sad.
I'd say try to get a place of your own if you can. |

Not in my neck of the woods (Vancouver/Victoria). I'd guess the number of homeowners who have a tenant in a basement suite or a roommate at well above 50% - probably about 75% or so. |

Gordon's experience with the roomie in Korea is not a one-off. The world of EFL is full of Walter Mitty types.
Come to think of it how would you fancy sharing quarters with me ? Suppose your school director told you that you had to shar an apartment with Mr Scot47 how would you react ? |
