About half the teachers with AETG/Princess Noura have returned for a second year so can't be all bad. |

Good one cmp...
I would take the loss of 50% of the staff as a VERY bad sign. Because a significant portion of the teachers in most any group will be too desperate for employment to leave even if conditions are dire. Then there is the percentage of management favorites who have been given the best classes/students/housing because of their wasta.
That would definitely be a factor that would make me refuse an offer.

Though there were cuts there, it was not even close to 50%... or even 20%. It was not so much the number as the way it was done and the timing.
But it was certainly an occurrence that should make any new employee of at least one branch of that system think twice before accepting a job.

KSA is less than desirable at any language schools...if you are not qualified to teach at college or university level ...I would not recommend teaching in KSA...period! |
As blunt as this quote is, cmp45 is doing the OP a favor by stating the unvarnished truth. Even with the best jobs in KSA, Saudi Arabia is a challenging and difficult place to live. If you have a good job offer (say at a government university), it might be worth it for a 50+ female to take a chance on being able to handle the harsh working environment in the Kingdom. If you are going to work at a "language school", pretty much every one of us experienced KSA teachers would tell you to forget about it. It'll take three days for all of your unrealistic daydreams about living in an exotic Middle Eastern country to disappear, and those daydreams are likely to be replaced with nightmares about how to get out of the horrific situation you've gotten yourself into.
Check my previous posts....along with Cleo, I am one of the few women in KSA who generally had a good time there. I say that to tell you that I have good reason to encourage you to heed cmp45's warning. It will not be worth it for you. |

Just remember that you landed in Saudi Arabia and not the other way around. There were more than a few old ladies with my company who couldn't handle it here. It depends on the person, but I think generally if you are over a half century old and single you will be better served teaching elsewhere. |

I recall something like Plymouth Rock landing on a race instead of a race landing on it.

I think anyone coming to this region for the first time at the age of 50 might have problems. Better to start younger ! |
