|
|
So unfortunately I didn't get off to Turkey in September as I had said I would if I couldn't find a job, mainly because there were a couple it looked like I might get. I know damn well how hard it is to get a job from outside the country, and from what I'm hearing on the thread where I asked about the job, it's pretty clear to me that the one job I've been offered (basically underpaid clerical work) is worse than nothing at all.
So I'm just going to pack up and go, as soon as I can get my loose ends tied up. Assuming I can wiggle out of jury duty (I'm thinking of moving to some friends' in VT), that'll be the very start of October.
I have a BA in Developmental Psycholinguistics, and SIT TESOL certificate, no experience teaching outside my course, and in terms of work experience, I'd held one summer job. Obviously this isn't how I put this on my resume, and I play up what little experience I have (such as volunteering at a nature camp where I designed projects; and collaborating with non-native English speakers on linguistics research) but it still doesn't seem to impress people. Also, the TESOL certificate was two years ago, and one employer basically said "I'm sure there's no way you remember anything."
A Turkish acquaintance told me I should look for jobs in Istanbul > Izmir or Tarsus > Bursa > Ankara, however I think he was talking about the best cities for Americans to live, rather than find a job. And he's lived in this country for years, so his knowledge of cities outside his family in Istanbul may be sparse.
So can anyone tell me: what would be the best places for me to find a job after September?
Thanks,

Thanks.
Sorry if I seemed a bit stupid, I'd figured Istanbul might be harder than Ankara or some of the more-off the path cities, due to the popularity of the city among foreigners.

Istanbul has most possibilities, but remember that it's possible to get lucky anywhere. I've never worked in Ankara, but I imagine there would be some possibilities there too. |
