Hi,

Has anyone had any experience with GBCL Global in Al Qassim?

They've invited me to an interview in London next week, but I'm not sure, they didn't seem that keen on paying travel expenses (I live in Scotland).

My guess is that they stink, unless anyone can tell me otherwise?

They interviewed me a couple of days ago. A good outfit and are offering very good pay and conditions for the right candidates. I presume you have an MA TESOL ? Their offer was around $4500 plus bonuses if I delivered.
Interview was pretty straightforward. No biggies, at least if you can articulate beyond the typical Scot. I got the impression they liked my Sussex drawl.

Cheers, mate. Did their package cover an annual Daily Mail subscription?

"at least if you can articulate beyond the typical Scot"

What does that mean ? Are you in the habit of making racist remarks on public forums ?

We could assume that his statement was in jest. Some days it seems that we are completely unable to refer to any nationality without someone getting upset. You must admit that many Scots speak in a way that is pretty obscure for the rest of us. But, one presumes (hopes? prays?) that they don't become English teachers.

I just read another thread where someone was accusing you of the same thing that you are accusing tefllifer of in reference to another racial group... Laughing

If the remark was directed at Afro-Americans it would be immediately deleted. Why is it okay to say it about Scots ?

Well, the majority of scotts, uncluding Uncle Scott, speak Scottish English, which is a kind of 12th century English! I think this has a connection with their patron St Andrew, who was crussified in an X shaped-cross! That's why Scottish English and culture are misunderstood by other native English speakers of other nations!

Uncle scott may confirm or deny my theory about Scottish English! Laughing

But, some Scotts are good English teachers regardless of their Scottish English, culture, sex, or eyes colour! Laughing

Dear 007,

Of course. it may have been only a typo:

"uncluding"

but I rather like it as a new word. Very Happy

Regards,
John

Well, John, when it comes to the use of English language, I am a Barbarian (not barbaric!). Laughing

It is nothing of the sort. Linguistics is clearly not your speciality, though it's not so clear what is.

12th century English sounded something like this:

Admittedly, there are parts of Scotland (the rougher parts of Glasgow spring to mind) where the spoken language is basically a pretty impenetrable dialect of English, but England also has it's fair share of very difficult accents: Scousers, Brummies, and Cockneys to name a few.

I would also say that English spoken in Northern Scotland is particularly clear, especially in Inverness. I'm sure I've heard it's the clearest spoken English in the UK, although a Scot may have started that rumour... Laughing

Anyway, to get back to the original post: They said they were very keen to see me down in London, but not so keen that they were willing to pay my travel expenses. Stinginess from the start isn't a good sign. Told them to jog on.

"I like what you've done with the place". This is what the English tourists said after the Treaty of Berwick in 1357 CE.

It's Sunday night here on the North American west coast, late, very, and all are asleep hereabouts; not a creature is stirring, not even a mouse. But not so on Daves; the Saudi board lives up to its reputation: the least expensive amusement in town - the least expensive across the ether, in fact.

I reluctantly leave you for the night, fellow aficionados, to all this to-ing and fro-ing, and of a hopefully benign nature; scot47, don't let them get you down!
