I'm looking for contract work as an English professor in Vietnam. I have a Master's degree and 8 yrs experience. I have never been to Vietnam though and am feeling quite vulnerable.
If you are there and can recommend some good schools or warn me where I should not accept work please speak up. I've had a few bad experiences in this work and certainly don't want to repeat it.
I have 2 offers but know nothing about the schools. |

I know of 2 universities that hire from time to time - Uni of QLD in Da Nang and RMIT in HCMC. Of the chain schools Apollo is probably your best bet. The thing is Vietnam is not all that interested in English 'Professors', if you're not prepared to be 'funny' (deliberate misuse of noun btw) then you're options are greatly reduced as far as I can tell. |

In Vietnam, you can be an English teacher. You can be a lecturer in business/communication/engineering/IT related fields. You certainly can not be an English professor.
Teaching English here means teaching English as a second/foreign language, not teaching literature. |

I know many people with MAs or PhDs who work here. You are correct to be concerned. The posters made good points. Do your research. What are you looking for? What will you accept and what will you not accept? This is Asia. Be realistic.
You should have little trouble finding work but limit your expectations. Thailand may be better if you have high expectations. Da Nang has a great university but it is small. RMIT is okay. Choose well. |
