I'm posting this because I worked at this school:

Not a pleasant school to work at by any means, but that's besides the point. I've seen other teachers cane their students at this school, and maybe because of my experience there I thought corporeal punishment was fairly standard in Thailand, although I was also told it was illegal. Anyone have input on this issue? Is it just Marie Vithaya or is it common at other schools?

Not only is it not common at our school, I have never seen a teacher strike a kid here. I have seen them run laps or get stuck on clean up duty for misbehavior.

I have seen corporal punishment used at middle and high schools in Korea as recently as last year even though it is also illegal to do so.

I saw it at a school I worked at. I questioned whether the teachers should have been caning the kids, and was told it was kind of 'don't ask, don't tell'. The canings were fairly mild though, I have to say.
