I was also under the impression that the OP's salary of over $1000 tax-free per month was a very comfortable amount of money to live on in Cambodia as well. I mean, isn't Cambodia one of the poorest countries in the world? That kind of money must go a long way! I was on a good couple of hundred less than that when I was in China, with a lot more qualifications than the OP. I think with what he has he might struggle to make $1000, or the equivalent in relation to the cost of living, in China.
I need to say though, depending on where you stay in China, cold weather doesn't have to be an issue. I was down on the border with Macau and it was basically always hot/warm.  |
I would agree that is a comfortable amount here in PP. I'm bringing in about $1,250 p/m and do fine. I hardly ever drink (maybe at a wedding or on my birthday, or on Jesus's birthday, etc) but eat western food quite often.
A quick summary of my monthly expenses>>
$120ish (rent in a small but nice studio apartment with utils)
$55 (motorbike)
$30ish (no more than that for gas, and that will drop drastically after I stop all my private lessons later this week)
$52 (gym/spa/pool membership at a so-called 4-star hotel)
$8 (moto parking)
$33 (unlimited 128kps internet in apartment)
$24 (business visa)
$525 (which includes ALL of my food and entertainment)
So, I end up saving about $400ish a month. I eat cheap local food a lot during the week, but always eat western food for almost every meal Friday-Sunday, including taking me gf out to eat a few times a week. But, I know many many teachers that live on way less that that a month, UNLESS they have some sort of addiction......
I also plan to buy a motorbike in the next few months, which will knock my budget down by another $50 a month, and I might not keep the gym/spa/pool after another 6 months, so that could also knock off another $50 a month.... |

I really think you should stay where you are to be honest. You sound like you are making a very good wage, and have a very good lifestyle, with very little qualifications. I can't see you making almost 8500 RMB without even a TEFL certificate, unless you break your back doing privates. You'll be struggling to save $400 a month in China. |

HaHa, I think you have me confused with the the OP... I have a AS degree, BA degree, CELTA and over a year and a half worth of teaching experience, AND I have no plans of leaving Cambodia.... It is Mr. Cheeks that is considering China, not I.... |

| We were in cambodia briefly for vacay this summer and loved it. Were planning on going back summer 2011, but plans changed and I'llbe going to Peru instead. |

Mention has been made earlier on this thread of it being easy to connect with work in Central/South America with minimal qualifications.
Can someone who knows first hand be more specific?
Ahhh -- now if only I could get a decent job at good pay with short hours in one location with only a BA in English in Buenos Aires! |

For specific information, check or post a query in the relevant forums.
As to getting a decent job with good pay, short hours and entry level qualifications and no experience = Good Luck - you're gonna need lots of it.
