Hello All,
I am an American who looks east Asian wishing to teach in the Middle East. I look genetically Korean. I have had several solid job offers and one scam sent to me from the Middle East and I would like to know if there is severe discrimination against East Asians as far as getting a job or living in Saudi Arabia/Oman/UAE. I have heard that the Saudi people are very conservative and do not treat such foreigners that well but can you give specific examples? I am an experienced science (5 years public in NYC) and ESL teacher (5 years private in Korea) with a Chemistry 7-12 license trying to grab a science or ESL position there.
Best,

Would it not be better to look for a job in an international school in the Far East ?

I am glad that you stopped here and were able to avoid being caught up in the ever-present UAE scams. First off... are you male or female? The issues that you may have to deal with would naturally depend on your sex. I do know of one Korean/Canadian woman who studied in Cairo and did a contract at the university in Qatar. She gave me no details, was happy enough to finish her contract, but her biggest problem seemed to be that she was a bit shy. The Gulf is a very multicultural environment, so much depends on one's own ability to make one's way.

You will find the students to be VERY different from Korea... especially the children. They are very undisciplined and not terribly academically oriented. Probably more like NYC than Korea. Laughing If you look into International Schools, it is best to stick to the ones where the expats send their kids.
