Hi, I work at a university in Oaxaca and received my FM3 work visa last November and will need to be renewing it at some point in the near future. Can anyone give me a brief description of what the process is, what I need to submit, etc?

Can I just go to the INM office in Oaxaca anytime prior to the expiration date with my passport and visa and pay a fee to get it renewed? Or there a specific window of time in which I need to do it?

I read in a earlier post on this subject that one must resubmit all of the original documents for a renewal. I truly hope that this is not the case.

Any information would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks!

Every INM office seems to interpret the rules differently with regards to which documents you need to present for a renewal. One thing that is fairly consistent is the you should do it a month before your present FM3 expires. I would make direct inquiries with your local office to find out what to do. You will have to submit certain documents in addition to your FM3 and passport, of that I'm sure. Remember that patience and good humor will get you far in Mexico when dealing with any authority.

Thanks for the information Isla Guapa, especially regarding filing for a renewal at least a month previous. Yea, I'll try to get in touch w/ the Oaxaca INM office and see what they say.

I did my renewal a day before expiry...

Still waiting though...the bicentennial must have pushed things back as I'm at 4 weeks waiting. Any day now I guess.

Guy C: Interesting, did you have to submit all of the original documents again or did you just have to go there and pay a fee?

When was the start date for the ID cards to be issued instead of the old passport looking visas? I was told I would be getting the ID card as well.

I renewed in Oaxaca in July. It's pretty straight forward. You need a letter from you saying the conditions under which you were given your FM3 remain the same, this is in lieu of new copies of all those documents, and your most recent pay stub. New fotos, tamano infantil this time. And pay. It's amazingly easy.

Here's a question. How will Migracion know how many days one has been out of the country since the new ID cards have no pages to put the stamps of when one left and returned?
Perhaps with the form one fills out before leaving the country?? November 2009 I went to Texas by bus, got my visa stamped but didn't fill a form out because I didn't know that I had to and the guy in the Migracion office in New Laredo didn't tell me I had to.
When I came back into New Laredo three days later I went to the Migracion office again for the stamp showing when I entered the country and he asked for the form. I told him I wasn't aware that I had to fill one out and he said no problem this time, just fill one out everytime in the future and return it to us when you come back to Mexico.
