Hi Everyone,

I have applied at HCT and will have an interview shortly. I have read about a lot of negative experiences at some HCT campuses. In your opinion, which HCT campuses should I NOT take a position at???

Thanks!

You won't get a choice of where you are placed ultimately. If you do a search you'll find recent threads on the latest campus to avoid because of management/admin issues.

Also, I have known at least 2 couples who were offered and accepted positions at one campus only to be told days before arrival that - oops, we need you at another campus. You're kind of caught out at that point.

It doesn't happen often but it can.

The general consensus seems to be that both of the Abu Dhabi sites are strong ones to avoid. Sharjah has never been high on anybody's recommendations either.

However, if, as the poster above has pointed out, they cunningly switch your location at the last hour, there's not a lot you can do - except back out, of course.

I would imagine that this trick is one that the devious HCT management will be trying a lot, given that their reputation has been falling earthwards with such speed recently. So watch out, and make your provisions accordingly.

If you read The National , you'll see there's tension throughout the HCT system.

If it's bad enough to make the government-controlled newspaper - it's bad.

Oh, there's 'tension' alright! Take a look at these articles:

http://www.thenational.ae/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100922/NATIONAL/709219821/1019

http://www.thenational.ae/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100610/NATIONAL/706099820&SearchID=73404083408074

I did appreciate the comment from the HCT management that the teachers should be happy to even have a job - way to go, lads!!

Short answer to the original question: All of them...

The recent article in The National doesn't even scratch the surface of discontent within the system. It has little to do with systemic change - and lots to do with...

Incompetent senior management that couldn't get a job elsewhere if their lives depended on it. They're dinosaurs who are just there to collect a paycheck and don't want to rock the boat to actually bring about the social change that education should promote.

Outright repression of women - if you're teaching at one of the women's colleges, all you're doing is increasing the bride price that daddy will get for selling her off after graduation. Despite the laws on the books "guaranteeing" them equal rights, as a practical matter, many Emirati women can't work or even leave their homes without the permission of a male relative. Don't believe the cultural apologists who tell you otherwise.

Being treated like a time-clock punching moron instead of a credentialed professional - 40 hour work weeks consisting of contact hours and ridiculous "busy work" created by administrators to justify their own positions.

Cultural hypocrisy

Being the beneficiary of modern day slavery/indentured servants in just about every aspect of your daily life.

I've been interviewed and given a position at what was referred to as one of the "flagship" campuses. Which one(s) would that be?

And why wouldn't they specify? Possibly because one of the largest campuses is ADWC which has very serious management/administrative problems right now.

I'd be nervous

IMHO ADM was traditionally referred to as the "Flagship" campus.

Local opinion appears to back the notion that the AD 'flagship' has hit the rocks and is in danger of sinking. That's why so many present teachers want out, before they get dragged down with it.

Board at your peril!
