The China Syndrome was a great movie, indeed, even Jack Lemmon was good. I was in Cambodia when he died and I raised a drink to thank God he had finally died because I was rather tired of him, among other luvvies, but of course, ten years on I feel a bit guilty about that... As for English, well, mine was never that good in the first place. That is why I taught in

Yes, yes, loads of touchy feely studies doing the rounds, yet most of them centre on children: not the case with EFL professionals. Other studies focus on migrants where their first language is no longer important. |
Perhaps you should go an re-read some of those studies. For someone who appears to be fairly ignorant on the subject, you are surprisingly dimissive of it. L1 attrition is a huge and very real problem, especially for refugee children, and yes also adult migrants. Its not so easily dismissed when you see the devasting results it can.
As I understood it, the original question posed by the OP was can teaching ESL cause or contribute to L1 attrition?. My answer is, possibly, but probably not, its more likely to be affected by other factors. Your answer seems to be, No, because it doesnt exist. Which is simply wrong.

The only affectation and attention-seeking I see here, is your determination to always play devils advocate. |

Dear HLJHLJ,
If Sasha were truly the Devil's advocate, he certainly wouldn't be teaching EFL (and possibly having his L1 attritted - my neologism.)
The Devil pays far too well.

| While it is true I'm dismissive of the subject, it isn't fair to say I'm ignorant of it, however it may appear to newbies. I also know a lot about NLP, but despite all the 'studies' done for that, I still doubt the truth of it. I'm not a big fan of 'learning styles' either. And if you think all that is bad, you should see what I've posted even on this forum about dyslexia. That should have you foaming at the mouth even more! |

The Devil, you say? Well, get my accommodations ready; I'll be down soon.

I think some people felt the same way about Bob Hope. Not me though, I loved him. |

I wonder if the Devil'd consider recruiting me. I'd like lots more of that lovely, luring, filthy lucre. |

Dear artemisia,
Well, there is the little mater of signing over your immortal soul to eternal damnation. But heck - EFL is a great dress rehearsal for that anyway.

My immortal soul has probably already been compromised - I'm feeling somewhat bedeviled by this thread.
Speaking of being bedeviled (and on to far more pressing matters than the fate of my soul) I don't understand my number of postings! I seem to be permanently fixed on '63' - I've checked back on a few of them - all 63. At this rate I'll never reach the utopian 100 gongs. This is just like 'Ground hog Day". |

Yes, I can see after at least 5 posts at 63 I've finally made it to 64! But how long will I now stay on 64?
Has the curse been lifted?? |

Do you think it would be fair to say that threads on Dave's often tend to digress somewhat from the original topic of discussion? |
