Hi,
Is anyone currently teaching in Can Tho?
I would like a listing of all the schools there, that employ English teachers.
Also any other information on accomodation, lifestyle etc would be appreciated.
Thank you. |

Can Tho- knowledge gleaned from a short visit, so certainly do some more research of your own... not too many expats there, good or bad depending on what you're looking for. A western face is still quite a novelty and draws a lot of attention around there, and I seemed to detect a bit of possibly- xenophobic indifference at times (very slow or even no service given in various dining or watering holes, regardless of eye contact with staff or relative lack of other customers), more so than in HCMC of course. If you enjoy nightlife, bars, clubs, discos, you'll be mixing with the locals and doing it Vietnam style, which means lots of effort on your part to make friends, learn the language, play pool with ridiculous rules, rice wine on the street, and head home around midnight.
Knowledge gained from following the news and various hearsay...it is Planned by Those Who Plan to become the Next Big City, a tech and industry center of the Mekong, with lots of FDI flooding in, it's own international airport, development of infrastructure, and all of the good and bad stuff that comes with it. It might be a good place to get in on, or it might be frustrating. |

I hope that you like sugar, as this is the main spice used in this area. |

Lovely city by Viet standards. Not many ex pats, but most things a "tay" could want can be had- Supermarkets-yes.
Long way from beaches etc.Night life? Right-Viet style.

Thank you all for your replies - I am not particularly interested in nightlife - have had enough of that in HCHC and PP. Good to know there are a few schools there and supermarkets for expat essentials. Anyone know average pay rate - I presume it would be less than in HCMC. However, I think I wiil give it a go.
Thanks Again |

Also only spent a little while there.
It's a nice place, I think, although I still prefer the center of the country more (Hue-Danang). Not sure I'd want to live there for a long period. Problem is that it rains perpetually. Drizzle is the norm, as everyone told me and I experienced myself. I guess in the dry season it's better, of course, but it rained maybe 90% of the daylight hours I was there, and a good portion of the night ones too. And, yes, it's far from proper beaches, which is sort of a killer for the idea since why go to a country that's a giant coast and then stay about as far from a beach as you can get...
Yeah, the sugar thing gets old quickly. Sugar and egg just isn't right...
It's a beautiful area, lots of canals and lazy little rivers, good vistas. The center of town is busy as anywhere during peak hours, but even that dies out quickly at night. I really liked my time there, some horrid boat touts aside. There's plenty of grocery stores (COOP and Wellcome, at least, iirc, on the main N-S street), and decent tourist infrastructure since it's a typical stop on the Mekong tours out of HCMC. Decently sized foreign area with pizza, etc, near the southern river.
Bigish city, over 1M people, but it still feels a bit small I think, but maybe I'm just too used to HCMC. |
