The British Council is among the 94 publicly funded bodies whose fate has yet to be decided

The Government apologised to staff for the uncertainty caused by the leaked Cabinet Office memo, which showed that 94 more quangos are under threat of being scrapped, four will be privatised and 129 merged.

When I was a BC teacher, I sometimes asked students what they knew about the BCs other activities. To them the BC was just a school. Its a mystery how this place still gets government funding after eight decades.

Any why do/did their cultural activities (conducted by Brits who have lived abroad for years) always centre around the arts? What about science and technology, which Britain does a fair bit of? It shows the lack of diversity amongst the BCs leadership.

Fair play to the present government, whoever they may be, for looking at this. Im not anti-BC, but I can see Britain has a huge deficit, and closing the BC would go largely unnoticed.

BC is basically a trade mission. It's educational wing may be axed, but the BC will continue...

Thanks. Im an even more awesome Daily Telegraph reader.

Britain has one of the worst deficits as a percentage of GDP in the world, according to OECD figures. Only Iceland and Greece have higher deficits and experts fear it could overtake Greece.

With such goings on, the BC didnt make the front pages. More newsworthy, alas, are the UK public service cuts. In this climate, if the government/civil service have already discussed scrapping the BC, then let's be honest, it has a lifespan of five to ten years.

The Brit Embassy does that. No BC staff have dealings in trade.

The British chambers of commerce and embassies deal with trade issues. Unlikely that the British Council will lose its educational services - that's how it makes its money!

From the time when Thatcherella was running the show, the BC has deteriorated into a Language School (with a bit of attitude). Its principal function now is to provide employment for those Hooray Henrys who are too dim to get into the Foreign Office. They provide the Admin. Classroom teaching is done by lesser breeds.

A couple years ago they' left a fair number of countries, so I'm sure this was bound to happen sooner or later.
