August 13 I dropped off the paper work and my old FM-2 and I'm still waiting for the new one. For all of you who are in the same situation, please let me know when you get yours.
I was told by phone that it could be anywhere from 35 to 90 days here in the DF. Not sure why it may take so long. |

Unfortunately, my prior status was tied to my now ex-wife. I didn't learn about the independent FM3 until only a few years ago and chose that route to start over. |

I got my new FM3 recently. It took a bit longer than previous renewals, but this is because they have done away with the passport style book and are now issuing cards with a photo on it.
Very useful, I must admit! When asked for ID, its so much easier to give the new format FM2/3.
I guess this is the reason that things are taking longer than normal.. its a new process and as with all changes, it takes a little bit of getting used to.
In the meantime, you have the letter stating that your application is being processed.
Finally, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought an FM2 was for life and one doesnt need to update it? |

1. Is it well made? I ask because I used to use my driver's licence, on which the details are printed on a clear plastic film, which is then (supposedly) laminated on to a standard backing. Fine, until the two parts separated. And they charge you to replace their shoddy workmanship!
2. The FM2 has to be renewed 4 times, as the FM3. At the end of that period you have the option of applying for a permanent FM2 (Inmigrado status rather than Inmigrante), which doesn't have to be renewed. |

well.. the FM isn't as well made as a driving license! I guess you should stop going swimming with it in your pocket hahahaha!
But, compared to the booklet, its much better.
Thanks for the FM2 info. I never knew that. Interesting! |

I have had my FM-2 for teo years now and I could have applied for Mexican Citizenship this time but thought I would do bad on the test since my Spanish isn't too well.
You have to be married to a Mexican I believe in order to apply for citizenship after two years. I think I'll go the permanent resident route. |

In my experience, there was one slight difference from what you wrote: inmigrado status wasnt an option. When I went for the 5th renewal, they told me Cant renew it, and Im WHAT!? but then they explained that this being the fifth year, I had to apply for inmigrado instead of renewal (refrendo) and it turned out that all the documents required were the same ones that I had been submitting the previous 4 years for the renewals. This is different from FM3, which you can go on renewing year after year as long as you want. |

Thanks for that! I hadn't even thought of that. But anyway, why would you NOT want inmigrado status? It seems to me a logical step and what I've been looking forward to all these years, to save the hassle of annual immigration visits.
BTW, do you know, under inmigrado status, how long you can be out of the country without having to start right back at the beginning? |

I don't want inmigrado status. I've been on an FM3 for 12 years.
Why?
Mostly ambivalence.
Sure I have left the immigration office frustrated and annoyed on more than one occasion. But it's generally 2 days a year out of 365, and I get over it. |

Chacun son got! But for those also considering their options, there is also the question of not having to pay another "tax" to the government every year for doing very little. |

But I'm a socalist.
And I just won two mesnualidades in the INFONAVIT lottery!
Mexico has given me so much more than I've ever given her.
But really, mostly abivalence and some inertia. |

Im going for citizenship next year when I`m elligible because I dont see any advantage to not having it. I wont have to continue with immigration. I wont be under any restrictions regarding time out of the country. If I decide to incorporate at some point, itll be cheaper and probably easier. Having citizenship should just make life a little bit more hassle-free. |
