Quick question:
Does Teachaway hire teachers soley to teach ESL for ADEC or are they looking for more specialised subject teachers?
I have an MA in Applied Linguistics and moer than 10 years' overseas ESL teaching experience.
Would Teachaway/ADEC be even slightly interested in me?
Thanks |

They are hiring only certified K-12 teachers - right now mostly at the lower grades... like K-3. Do you have an official teaching cert/license from your home country? It is required. Check their website.

They're hiring for primary and high school (no middle school years, though...yet). In primary you'd teach English, science and maths. Teach Away doesn't do college or university placements, and as far as I can see, in UAE they're just doing English placements. There's a massive and ongoing discussion on their facebook page if you want more (perhaps too much?) information. |

I only teach EFL. Is that going to be a problem? |

Do you have a teaching certificate/qualification from your home country? I'm pretty sure they require one. Again, check their website; contact them. The worst that can happen is they say no to UAE & try to place you elsewhere.
ADEC is only interested in qualified (certified) teachers, though. That much I'm (pretty) sure of. |

Yes. In fact, it's twice a good now. The power of degrees multiplies with the amount of time you post about it!
NCTBA (Actually, mitw was referring to having a teaching certification for K-12 in yer country...do you have one? If not, yer SOL...) |

No... that is a different qualification. As both mimi and I have already mentioned. You need the proper certificate/license that would be required for you to teach K-12 in your home country. (they seem to want US or UK or Canada)
Your MA will be useful for university level teaching... but you will need to apply directly through their websites.

Hi adrianmark
ADEC DO NOT employ EFL teachers. They only employ classroom teachers. If you want to work on this project you will have to go to one of the providers CfBT, Mosaica etc.
Your IELTS experience will no doubt be invaluable to them as they have to get all teachers through IELTS at different levels depending on what job they do.
Hope this clears it up for you.

I work in a school which has Licensed Teachers (LTs) and from what I gather, it is a mixed bag. They can end up with a school that's not very supportive of them. ADEC can be even less sympathetic to complaints, squaring things right back to the (Emrati) school management. As Consultant Partners on the PPP Project, we are now having to take the initiative to intervene and offer support.
They'll most likely be given Grade 12ers who will range from very keen (to improve their English before university - otherwise they'll have to do a foundation year) to the complete opposite.
I heard some can earn up to 18-20K AED/month.
Working hours can also change at the behest of the school management....
If you want me to look at details of specific job offers, feel free to PM me. |
