I am Life President of the opposition group "End Bourgeois Apostrophes Now"
(EBAN). In my complementary role as Treasurer I welcome all financial assistance to rid the world of this pestilential scourge. |

Let slip the dogs of war!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some get pretty heated about the whole thing.
It's just amusing that apostrophes have self appointed guardians and a protection society... as if there weren't other more pressing matters one could concentrate on.

As long as both the genitive case and most plurals are both marked by an 's' suffix, we'll continue to need the apostrophe (or something with a similar function) to keep things clear. Without apostrophes, the phrase 'the boys toys', for example, doesn't tell us how many boys have toys.

It's a fairly activist group, I might add:
Quote: |
He said on his blog: "We are constantly getting residents asking for apostrophes to be put back in and as a council we have got to make a decision one way or another. |
I know if I lived there, I'd be on the phone at least weekly until this societal blight was rectified.
This could have ramifications. Do you think colons might be impacted over this? |

Only if you're operated on for colon cancer. Then you'll have a semicolon. |

Dear Sheik,
"Then you'll have a semicolon."
Which still would function much better than a comma splice.
