Just curious. Very new here, so don't mean to presume anything. It just seems that there is decent interest in ESL in Ecuador, so why doesn't it have its own forum? I would like to learn more about the current state of teaching there. Thoughts?

Welcome to the boards.

I'm probably one of the oldest Ecuador hands here, and don't really want us to have our own forum-

There's quite a lot of interest, but not enough to make a very active page. By being on the "general" page, it seems to stimulate more discussion, including discussion with people who are in other countries and wouldn't visit an Ecuador specific page.

We're just a little country, after all. Wink

If you have questions about Ecuador, though, feel free to post them here, and those of us who know the country will do our best to answer them.

Best,
Justin

It's a good question. We are the country with the biggest presence with teacher training and one of the fastest growing employment markets in South America. I've written to the moderators twice in the last year to request it but never got a response Sad

We are excited about teaching in Equador and are trying to decide where we would like to focus our job hunt, Quito or Cuenca. Can anyone give us any thoughts on the benefits of teaching in these 2 cities?
Thanks!

e&p
The biggest difference, I think, is simply size.
Quito is a city with over 1million people, with all the size, services, crowding and big city problems as any city that size. Of course, it is also the government center, so it has a large expat community for all the embassies and businesses involved, since almost all international companies who do business in Ecuador has offices there. Along the same line, there are also lots more opportunities for jobs there.
Cuenca is basically a small university town. It has the advantages of less crowding and pollution and crime, and I think is more picturesque. But likewise the job opportunities are much more limited there.
Both are Sierra (Highland) cities with strong Spanish Colonial flavors, including massive churches and palaces built as early as the 1500s.
Good luck

I think there should be a separate Ecuador forum too. Enough people are coming here, and the visa situation is complicated enough that we merit our own forum. And definately keep Ecuador and Peru separate. There was a war, you know.

Why not contact Dave Sperling with your suggestion? There is a contact link at the bottom of this page. Good luck!

Although Justin Trullinger makes a good point, it sure would make it a bit easier to have most of the information I needed centralized in one location. I don't mind digging and sorting through things too much (because I do learn a lot!), but I end up spending more time looking for answers than I probably should be.

I think we could add it to the Peru forum. Have you contacted Dave?

Again, if you desire an Ecuador forum, please bring it to his attention as I indicated above.
