Hello everyone,

I was an aupair in Darica when I was 17 (Im 19 now) and I'd like to spend another summer in Istanbul. Aupairing does not appeal to me however... I was wondering if its possible to find a job as either a private tutor or in a school as an English instructor without having a degree. I'd like something casual, it doesn't need to pay great.

A Turkish friend of mine said he had English tutors when he was younger, but he wasn't sure what qualifications they had or where his parents found them. I would even be interested in working in a hotel/resort/restaurant/club or any place that might need native English speakers.

I know most people on this site are more serious, professional English teachers, but any information on this sort of thing would be extremely helpful.

Thanks very much!

Kaitland

Here's my advice to you if you want to go back without babysitting small children all summer. Use the service at www.greataupair.com. It's free, and by far the best in my opinion. There are usually several Turkish families registered at any time. Fill out an aupair form but be very, very specific. Say that you want to live out (if that's what you want), specify the ages that you are willing to work with (eg, 12-17) and in your profile state that you are an English tutor who is looking for private work in Turkey over the summer. List any past experience, inlcuding the time you already spent in Turkey, that you may have tutoring and helping people learn English (like you would in a resume). You can specify that you want a salary, which you will negotiate, or you could say that you are willing to work 15 hours in exchange for lodging (typical arrangement) possibly with more hours for extra pay.

Over the last couple of years, I have seen several ads placed by people who don't even have children, but want someone to stay with them and help them practice their English, or by people with teenagers who only want someone to be availabe for hanging out and speaking English to them a couple hours a day.

Someone on the site might see your profile and be interested or think to themselves; I really want a traditional au pair but my friend wants to practice their English and maybe I should tell them about this girl...

It can't hurt since it's free, and you never know what might come out of it.
But, I think that it will be difficult to find a job as an English instructor without at least a BA, bare minimum.

What do you propose doing about a work permit ?

Would you take the risk of working illegally ?

Thanks so much for the information! I will do that right away!

I worked illegally last time, I'm willing to do it again... As long as you don't make much money I don't think its too dangerous.

Once again,

Thanks!
