Im going for citizenship next year when I`m elligible because I dont see any advantage to not having it. I wont have to continue with immigration. I wont be under any restrictions regarding time out of the country. If I decide to incorporate at some point, itll be cheaper and probably easier. Having citizenship should just make life a little bit more hassle-free.

That's also why I've not gone to FM2 and Inmigrado, I'm eligible for citizenship if I ever decide that I want it. But again, this darn inertia keeps getting in the way!

Makes sense continuing with the FM-3 if youre just stalling, but procrastination is always more expensive.

Even though I don't have the ties to Mexico that MotherF has, I would jump at the chance to jump to inmigrado status right now, but to each her own (decision).

Someone please coorect me if I'm wrong but I heard that even if you're a naturalized citizen, there is still a time restriction for how long one can be out of the country. Two years I believe.
If anyone knows for sure please feel free to correct my assumption. I may even ask when I go to pick up my visa...if they ever get it ready. Crying or Very sad

As best as I can make out, according to the Ley de Nacionalidad, Articles 27 and 28, and the Constitution, Article 27 B-II, it's 5 years of continuous residence outside the country. (Not sure Im referring to the most current versions of the law, though. Its hard to tell on the Internets.)

As for FM-2 holders, as far as I can find, inmigrantes (persons in the first 5 years of the FM-2) can remain outside the country a maximum of 18 months out of the 5 years (either continuous or cumulative). If your total time outside Mexico exceeds 18 months, you start over again counting your 5 years.

For inmigrados, the maximum time outside of Mexico without losing inmigrado status is either 3 consecutive years or 5 years out of 10.
(Ley de Poblacin, Article 47, 53 & 56.)

In any of these cases, you can apply for an exemption if you are outside the country because you are studying abroad under the auspices of a Mexican institution of higher education, or working abroad for a subsidiary of a Mexican company, or cuando a juicio de la autoridad migratoria exista causa justificada.

It's no use asking about citizenship in immigration. That is a matter for the Secretara de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE), as is the application for same.

Got my new FM-2 on Tuesday the 5th. I dropped off the old one on August 13 and kept checking online but it was never ready so we went to Migracion in Polanco.
The problem was we used to go the the Migracion office in Polanco that 's the tall building and we would take the letter saying I'm doing independent work teaching English. They stamped the letter BUT NOT THE VISA.
So when we went to the other Migracion building in Polanco this year, we didn't leave the stamped letters because it wasn't on the list that we had that told us what we needed to do.
Anyway, we took the stamped letters the next day and got the visa the same day. Here's a tip for those of you living in the DF...If your visa isn't ready within one to two weeks, go to the office in person to make sure everything is OK.
That's what they tole me to do in the future if it's not ready in that timeframe. What about your Guy?

Have to wait until Friday to go in...

Which building did you end up going to...the one on Homero or the one on Ejercito (at least they are close to each other!). They've told me to go to window D (at Ejercito where I've always gone)...which desk did you get things resolved at?

We went to the one on Ejercito. The desk (or area) said Ventanilla Express. Hope that helps. Let me know what they say.

Is it relatively easy to obtain a visa to teach independently? I will have my tourist card to start but I know I want to teach there for the long term. What should I do first when I get into Mexico?

Thanks for the help!!!

In Mexico City it isn't hard to get the independent FM3, but it may not be equally as easy in other offices around the country.

Basically, you need your passport, 2000-something pesos, a degree and/or TEFL/TESOL/CELTA certificate, the application, and a letter written in Spanish outlining what you plan to do and why you are qualified to do it.

Later, you'll need to get a tax number to be able to write up receipts for students or companies if you plan to go that route.
