After 10 years of teaching languages I think the best thing you can do for a student is somehow inspire the confidence they need to speak/learn a language. I've noticed this takes place when you don't actually teach them per se, rather work with what they already have and get them confident with it.

The classes I have at the moment all say their English has improved but I've taught them nothing in the way of grammar or anything from a dry coursebook, yet their English has improved. I put it down to them being much more confident and less fearful but who knows.

Also, English taught in a classroom situation is like any other subject. There'll be students that are good at it and students that are not. There is not much a teacher, no matter how great, can do about it within the confines of the classroom dynamic. It's archaic, especially in Mexican culture where they're spoon-fed from day one.
