I applied for this position after having seen it here on Dave's. I just got a reply that they need teachers right away and if I am interested they will send me an offer letter. Has anyone heard of this outfit? Can anyone give me some information...good - bad - go and enjoy - stay away...you know what I mean.

I've never taught in the Middle East but I have 5 years experience, 1 in Korea and 4 in Laos. I am a 49 year old male. If that means anything there.

It's a new University, will be some "teething" problems but good intentions I have heard. Nice town on the border with Al Ain which has some life and shopping, parks etc. Only an hour and a half from Dubai or Abu Dhabi for the big city life......I would say a good idea to go for.

Thank you eslbear,

The offer was for 950 OR a month which is about $2500US. Not a lot from what I have seen but it includes a furnished single apartment + health care and airfare two ways and 30 days paid holidays. So I think a fairly reasonable package. I'm teaching in Laos now and it is a serious step up from here money wise.

Does the package sound decent to you?

Well, assuming you have a degree, teaching cert and 2-3 plus years of experience, then, yes, it is a reasonable package.

Oman is not like the UAE or KSA but the cost of living / quality of life is better so that salary is plenty. All in all, a typical package for the job.

Brace yerself for a LONG HOT summer punctuated by a short stint of not living in a place where the sun is about five feet above yer head 7 months of the year...

But at least it doesn't have the ghastly oppressive humidity of the coastal cities. November through March is some of the most beautiful weather in the world... the rest of it? Mostly like an oven. Laughing

The weather is what I am looking for. I've been in Laos for over 4 years and heat is something I like! It beats the heck out of Canadian winters!!!

It is quite humid here from June to September, the rainy season surprise surprise...but October to March is beautiful, hot sunny and dry.

As I understand it, and I should point out that I have never been there, the University is situated in a remote and isolated location, quite some distance from the town of Buraimi itself. I would think having your own vehicle will be fairly essential to your quality of life - but then this is true of Oman in general.

be careful of Buraimi - they go hot/cold with job offers - then pull them or simply disappear into nevereverland.
They're also really expanding for the first time so there will be teething problems (though I can't imagine any more than any other institution in Oman).
Only good thing is the proximity to Al Ain, UAE.

I can only repeat what I have said on a similar thread.

Those who are ESL veterans will run for the hills on arrival (as many have). It's a nightmare you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy.

Those new to TESOL may change their career paths after taking up employment there.

It's worse than I can describe on this website. Seriously.

The city of Buraimi itself is lovely as are the locals. Really good people.

Serious teachers be warned. Steer clear of this one. PM me if you really need details.

Try the local college instead. Seems to be legit.

Good luck.
