hi everyone,
hoping to get the 4-1-1 on private lessons in china. i've taught in korea before and pl's were very common despite the fact they were illegal. how about china? i ask because it appears the pay there is quite low. are pl's illegal in china? are they also common and how much do teachers usually charge? also, it seems there's quite a disparity in pay rate. i have teaching experience, currently teach esl, and i'm finishing my m.a. in tesl and i also have a research study that is currently "in review" so there's a good chance i will be published by the time i earn my m.a. could someone with my qualifications demand more money...maybe 15-20000 rmb?

I assume your TESOL course doesn't include the following:
The use of majuscules?
The use of the Internet to source information?

it did include the five gricean maxims. and you flouted the maxim of quantity. but i'm sure you have no idea what i'm talking about. what are you an elitist or a self-proclaimed grammar nazi? you go into these forums to criticize people for not capitalizing?

no. u may get lucky and land a job paying over 15000... but likely those jobs will be going to people that have been in country for a while... its took me a few years to earn that kinda cash.

Private lessons are typically prohibited by most school contracts.
But, many people here do them anyway.
I have charged as little as 150RMB per hour and as much as 250RMB per hour , depending upon the circumstances.

I seriously doubt you could start in China at 15-20,000 per month.
It is more likely that you could start at 8,000 to 12,000.
Many times it is who you know, not what you know, that will get you the higher paying jobs.
In other words, it is very possible that your MA and being published will not help you to secure the higher paying jobs in China.

Most of the highest paying jobs go to licensed teachers.

I'm not sure what either Sinobear or beege are typing about in regards to TESL/TEFL. But, do think that NO ONE in China will pay a Korean to teach them English privately, unless of course they are Korean.

My advice to beege is to look into jobs in places where a lot of Koreans live, such as Qingdao. Then you will probably be able to get some extra hours.

Extra hours - the words make me weezy!

Good Luck!

Where is it written that beege is Korean ?

My understanding is that he has taught in Korea, not that he himself is Korean.

Roger,

I am not a member of Dave's Police Patrol but do have a relatively good memory and can conduct "research" to confirm my inclinations concerning prior posts. Someone previously refered to beege as a KBA.

That notion was denied and based on what I read, beege was born in Korea and eventually became an American citizen, hence - not KBA. I assume he/she moved to the US as a child and learned English. Kudos.

Keep in mind, I "teach" in China = not the brightest camper on the planet!

Wait, now I'm confused. I think Sinobear was right. Unless of course beege was born in the US = Korean-American. Either way - Long Live GWB!

Paul,
You are right, I checked his prior posts and he does state that he is a Korean American.
